My kids loved the MX5 and love the Caterham. My wife thinks it important I have my toys, likes the odd spin herself (oo-er) and simply asks that I take care when out and about.

We could get into the technical differences of soft tops / fixed roof and natter away about % odds and risk avoidance but it'll get boring quickly. And there's no way we are getting involved in your marriage rules about mutual respect and feelings - that's your own bag OP, none of our business chap - you two live in the way you both want to.

But OP, and this is a rather big but I'm afriad.
When we really boil this down, one must conclude from the input you have given, that your wife is telling you that she really doesn't trust her children with your driving.
Which must be interpreted as you being a poor driver.
A poor driver, here on PH!!
Shame on you OP, shame on you.
Think about.

That's why I'm considering a Series Landy (that and the three kids): top off, door tops removed and windscreen lowered and we can trundle round the lanes with sunnies on collecting bugs in our teeth biggrin
Fit the rear longways bench seats & you don't even need seatbelts!

My daughter has been coming for top-down rides in my MX5 since she was maybe 15 months old and she loves it. My wife wasn't keen at first (she hates the car) but she's come round to the idea after seeing how much she enjoys it.

I am conscious that we're vulnerable in such a small car but in some ways I think that's offset by my resulting lack of complacency. Obviously if a drunk driver hit us head on we'd be stuffed but if I thought that was really likely I just wouldn't be on the road.

I took my daughter out in the mx5 when she was six months old and in a rear facing seat thingy. Roof off, heaters to full ( it was february!). She loved going out in it... Sold last summer, but would have no worries about buying a convertible again to transport kids around.....

Practicality killed it for me, especially with another sprog on the way...

In respect of 'doing what I want' I think even the most self centred have to concede that I have to be considerate that she's the child's mother!
Yes and you are the father so that's 50:50 split so then it comes down to either:

Who knows more on the subject
Or
Who wears the trousers

I appreciate the ' wink ', tho you may be near the truth in terms of perception. That said, and without being an arse, I've got a piece of paper that says otherwise smile

Glad you saw the wink

Plus, your wife had the Mini convertible so should know a bit about soft tops.

Modern cars have pretty good roll-over protection. If any car is in a situation that it ends sunny side up, then it's all a bit of a risk anyway.
