All the digital media stuff is great as a spin off or incremental income, but like others I don't think its commercially viable a central model given the costs involved.

TV is the best medium for it and there would be an appetite for another car programme which was more towards the serious end of the entertainment/cars spectrum.

Replicating TG is pointless, but I'd prefer something a bit more cerebral and focussed on aspirational cars, a few history lessons on particular models or marquees, and some decent interviews of various drivers from different motorsports. It doesnt have to be dry, nor massively big budget with overseas challenges etc.

There's plenty of existing channels who might be interested too (excluding Discovery/Turbo who would see it as competing for the same advertisers).

Not sure Monkey could carry it alone though (no offence Chris) but he does have the credibility to do the hooning aspect.

hehe - I see what you did there, but I do think kpb has a point - I reckon BBC4 could potentially do a far more cerebral car show, possibly presented by James May, maybe along the lines of a Fred Dibnah programme.

Something with a Setright-level of analysis and appreciation, tying into culture at large, would be great. BBC4 do some excellent car documentaries (often featuring hefty contributions from Quentin Willson, no less), but they're all stand-alone things rather than part of an occasional series.

Documentaries like Deadliest Crash, Grand Prix: The Killer Years and Madness On Wheels have been extremely popular, far more so than the people who created them expected them to be. There's something in that - think also about the success of Senna and the forthcoming Rush, out next year. There is definitely interest in motorsport and motoring history. I do wonder whether there'd be mileage in a fairly regular, cliche-free classic car/car culture show.

Actually, that's it - it would be like The Culture Show, but about cars and motorbikes.

I rarely watch TV. Why would I need to see him on TV when I can watch him online?

The web has eaten printed media. It's been eating TV for a while too.

Although informative, I find his videos and presentation exceptionally boring. So not for me, sorry frown

I look forward to every video Chris and his team make. I mostly agree or respect his views. TV is exposure, it's where the money is to be made and if there was an opportunity to progress there, I'm sure he would take it. His internet based following would multiply more than ten fold.

Top Gear is fine for what it is. A car based comedy show featuring three stoogies. I like it, but in all honesty any review from the TG team would have very little effect on my own opinion.

Fifth Gear has never hit the spot for me. It's VBH, I don't know why, but she really grates me.

Harsh.

CH's tone I find is measured. It's very refreshing. I'm bored of seeing people who drive fast cars all the time, still pretending that each new one is still making them almost wet their pants, for the sake of TV.

I like the measured approach with an analytical undertone. He poses sensible, relevant questions and then sets about answering them with considered explanations. It's just right for me but as said, as no place on a catch-all like TG and while Fifth Gear gets closer, it's still over the top and amateur by comparison.

FG amazes me sometimes. Mainly I enjoy watching it but sometimes it's very obvious they're just talking absolute bks.

Yes, it's like he's the CW7 equivalent of the motoring journalists world.

There is some arse licking for lots of things on PH (have we established the exact identity of a certain McLaren yet?). But be fair to people simply expressing that they like his style. We're still allowed to to like things, aren't we?

Or do we all have to walk around being too cool for school saying simply "Meh" to things we genuinely get enjoyment from, in case we're accused being being brown-nosers?

I enjoy watching CH. I love some TGs but hate others and same goes for FG. But i have to worry about giving any approval or positive feedback in case im labelled a fan boi or something equally puerile?
Regardless of whether you enjoy his presentation style, I think you would struggle to argue that his contributions to the site have not added a much needed injection of quality and dare I say it, actual journalism. I imagine we would be sayings the same if Steve Cropley signed up, but he didn't, Harris did. So it's fair to assume there will be some fan-fare for his efforts.

Or, offer an objective and reasoned argument for why he is not very good. I don't care. But trying to hush people responding in the positive just appears lazy and small minded.
