One observation on the PH write-up....

"Nikasil" exists only in legend. Any cars which were going to go wrong probably went wrong a decade ago. Absolutely nothing to even think about in 2012!!

So people can buy running E34 V8s without fear or they need to check that they start on the button?

This is definitely SOTW, saying of the week. I'm going to a wedding this weekend, and I'm determined to make use of it.

I'm sorry, this just isn't true.

A few years back I heard people making similar statements on a BMW forum to people looking to buy E36 328s. More than one person bought a car that had covered highish miles, so in theory if it was going to go wrong already would have, only to find that it was fooked.

It's not a legend or a myth, it's a very real problem that still crops up even now after many years.

I am hoping those words aren't part of the groom's speech about his new wife. Might be a short marriage.

Loved the writing of this one. The bit about being older and more stupid, and the look on the girl's face... brilliant.

Agreed; was interested in what looked like a very well cared for low mileage e34 540i on the other side of the country, supposed full BMW SH but had been mislaid - called BMW Customer Services with chassis number and it's last visit to them 2 months previous was to investigate an idle issue, this revealed low compression on nearly all cylinders, guy on the phone said to walk away...

I think the issue was more apparent some years ago at lower mileages but you should still approach so called troubled cars with a degree of caution.

Just don't think that if there's an idle problem it is instantly Nikasil wink

Perhaps, the seasoned shedder could go and take a look and form their own opinion, then make an appropriate offer if it is still viable, it depends how much the seller has remedied already (new hoses) and whether the reamining faults are show stoppers or merely annoying bongs, suspect the boot open thing is the sensor is out of alingment, broken or missing, Rear washer cant be that big of a deal.

The auto box issues would be the main concerm then any cooling issues if still present.

I suspect they all have some issues, seller has been mostly honest, though his ad didnt say it was the "Worse" car ever...

I reckon its £500 worth, above scrap and about what you would get as a trade in these days, some people price these still at 4 grand, cant imagine they sell, best of the best is 2k worth tops I reckon.

Would have been an epic shed if it didnt require a load of work.

Those alloys look mint and other parts would be worth more that the money paid for it if sold separately.
Loads of alloys available on ebay including sets for "winter tyres" if you want to keep nice wheels mint.

Great Shed, one of the Best.

My dad had one of these, unbeatable at eating up a road!

Would prefer a good sport though for a few £k more...

Best of the best is still £5000 and still worth it. This one though isn't worth a grand.

Kept nice these are great cars to be in. Knackered they're an expensive, unenjoyable heap

In my experience all of the boot/wiper issues are interlinked and it's no biggie, the motor/contacts corrode badly. In my case, whenever the rear wiper went on the back tailgate window would open.. Fairly easily sortable.

I would tend to agree with the first statement. Premature nikasil wear has been attributed to the sulphur content in petrol. Since the mid '90s the sulphur content has been reduced to at least 25% of what it was then. I'm not sure what the comparative levels are in 2012 but even by about 2002, they had dropped to 25%.

I had a 01 facelift 540 sport touring for 7 years. Sold it due to a change of job and a child on the way and bought a diesel. Diesel lasted one year before I sold it, lost a massive amount in depreciation and was terrible. I now have an e65 750 which is great but not as good as my e39 was.

God how I miss that car!
