I've been caught out by those bloomin washers on the top mounts too! You don't get them with the top mounts, and you don't get them with the shocks...

And everything seems fine until one random bump of just the right size sends the damper rod through the boot carpet!

The photo reminds me of one of my silver 328, at about the same angle, on what I'm pretty sure is the same corner on the ring...

Really enjoyed the vid. It looks part immense fun and part terrifying. I think I'd be depositing some standing water inside the car on some of the really wet high speed sections.

Dale's managing to break things that I've not managed to in over 300 laps in my 328! His is only a low mileage one too - mine's on 174k!

Everytime something breaks, it's the chance to upgrade to something stronger so that hopefully it won't go again. I'd keep my eye on the engine mounts Dale, especially as you have the viscous fan still(?) worth going for M3 mounts, or some nice aftermarket ones, as when they let go the engine will surge forward upder braking and the fan can chop into the radiator - could be a disaster on the Ring. You could remove the viscous completely, worth it for a couple of BHP and the lighter flywheel effect. Just wire in an override switch on the electric fan for when you're stuck in a queue in traffic.
You can put a lower temperature fan switch in from a 318is. This turns the aux fan on at a lower temperature. You can also swap in a lower temperature thermostat.
I also put M3 Evo Manifolds, Cats and a Milltek Cat Back system on my car. This has been a great mod and really improves top end power, although not as much as the M50 manifold.
Just have to get a LSD for mine and I'll be dead pleased with it.

Keep an eye out for the front X brace, usually reported as far more beneficial than a regular strut top version.
I might have one of these popping up for sale before too long. Breaking a 328i Cab. for it's engine and 'box.

So the car was £950, does that include the engine transplant?
Because that seems a lot to pay for a buggered 3-Series from the '90s.....

Note to self: avoid driving near this car on track

If i was doing the speeds you're doing on track in a shed, i'd be paying more attention to warning lights, and investing in a little more prep work!!
To be fair, with German plates on it's subject to a lot more scrutiny than any UK car will be at MOT time, so personally that's the car I wouldn't bat an eyelid at on track.

On the subject of specific parts failures, my brother had the steering pump fail on him during a lap of the Ring (E46 328i); the pump in my E46 330i failed in the car park of the Ring before partaking of any laps! The shaft snaps in those pumps, so they turn freely, the belt doesn't pop off, but the pump doesn't do anything. The unofficial recommendation is to drain the fluid from the system, and drive on without that massive resistance until you can get it all fixed.

wink thanks for the tip!

So from what I gather, power steering and rear suspension mounts are the way to go for inital track care.

Anyone had any trouble with the "guibo" flex disc? I get a violent vibration in second gear at peak torque, haven't taken a look under yet, but seems to be it.

The vibration is more likely to be centre bearing than the flex disc.
The flex disc would give shunting on and off power.

Hmmmn, sounds like a terribly unreliable motor there, Dale. You should look at something which is newer, better built, better handling etc. like an RX8....

sorry. boxedin
