Sainz's car in the video you posted sounded a bit lumpier with more spluttering, but I think that is probably more to do with the incredibly aggressive antilag setup he used.
I'm not sure exactly what it was that did it (I think the Impreza WRC may have all run equal length headers, but I'm not 100% sure on that) but, irrespective, the Group A Imprezas were by far the best sounding Impreza rally cars in my opinion. Its not just Sainz car: all the Group A Imprezas sound that much more aggressive than the World Rally Car specification cars that followed. Having said that, some of the World Rally Car Imprezas sound pretty damn good as well (especially the much later S12B's).
Getting back on topic though, I fully agree with Dan Trent. I could happily spend all day watching footage of this nature (with raw audio of course! ). Although you can argue about the sound(s), the wide arch, two door, Impreza S5 and S6 WRC have to rate as one of, if not the, most iconic looking rally car of the modern era.

I had an Sti Type R V5 years ago, I still miss that car. Weighed a smidge over 1200kgs so was nimble as you like, the adjustable diff meant it didn't suffer from understeer like most normal Impreza's and could in fact oversteeer on demand and it had a turbo engine that loved to rev to it's 8250rpm redline, none of this stupid diesel-alike turbo delivery you get nowadays but a turbo engine that actually felt exciting to wring out.
The short shift gearbox was a pleasure to use and a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds is impressive now but back then it was astonishing. Add in the supple suspension with it's long travel which was effective at keeping the car firmly planted but still compliant enough to soak up the imperfections of our crap roads and it was a brilliant car.
IMO the pinnacle of Impreza development, every iteration since hasn't come close as they progressively got heavier, more comfortable, uglier and more expensive which really defeats the whole point of the Impreza. It's unique selling point was a practical four seater with supercar slaying pace for a fraction of the cost, somehow Subaru seem to have forgotten what made them so special along the way.
In short they were the ultimate peoples champion, B road slayer, track weapon and family car all rolled into one and I still think about getting another as a track toy from time to time.

Yeah, have to agree, the 555 Impreza did sound better than the WRCar version, whereas the Escort WRC sounded better than the Escort RS Cosworth. Hence this video

P1 was based on the STI 6 wasn't it?
Yep, indeed it was. And I would have hoped that Newera would have known that. They've been importing JDM cars for years!Alex said:
I think it was the STi 5, actually.
I should know, I've got one!
From my knowledge of Impreza's the STI 5 was built from 1998 - 99 and the STI 6 from 99-01. Seeing as the P1 was built in 2000 it would have been built from an STI 6.I should know, I've got one!
Sorry - was a proper Impreza anorak when I was a teenager, Dad had one and it all went downhill from there!

According to the chaps over on the P1 owners club...

...the P1 was Version 5 based. Would like to think they've got it right!

When the first child came along we had a Saab 900 Turbo 3-door. My wife said it had to go. She wanted an estate. She probably mean a passat diesel.
Obviously I went a got a WRX estate. Loved it. Just brilliant. Then a second one, and then two Legacys (three children by now). Now there's no Subaru in my life.
I miss that exhaust note daily.
