Interesting, although Wiki says the RB5 was based on a WRX which would make it a T2000 just in a different colour and with some additional detailing trim.

I'm not saying it isn't a nice car, but what does it actually do over a T2000 for the additional money?
wiki is incorrect, there was no GC8 UK wrx was defo based on the uk2000. With the WR pack you got 240bhp, larger rear wing, sti ecu and a prodrive exhasut
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but a Turbo 2000 is the UK spec WRX, it's built using the same components (bar spec changes).

The RB5 was a UK special edition built on the Turbo 2000 (aka WRX) in a unique colour and minor trim items (like the earlier Series McRae (1995) and Catalunya (1997) versions were).

The RB5 was offered with 2 optional Prodrive packacges (PPP) one that included an exhaust and ECU that brought power up to 237bhp/240PS (don't think this is an STI ecu as it'd make no sense seeing as an STI is a different engine, turbo and intended for 100 RON octane fuel). And a 2nd handling package. I believe both packages could also be bought and specced on a regular Turbo 2000.

In essence it it the same came but there are lots of small difference between the UK cars and JDM cars, the ecu was said to be tuned by sti but afaik had a prodrive ecutek map on it. other differences below

Std Specification :-

Blue steel metallic body colour (colour code 86F which is "cool" grey on the STi imports)
Fully colour-coded exterior (i.e. door mirrors, door handles, side skirts, front & rear under-spoilers, driving lamp covers)
Blue 'Alcantara' and suede-effect interior trim, with black 'jersey' surround on seats
Special graphite trim for the centre console
Air con
Special 'Speedline' 17in, 6 spoke, alloy wheels in 'pewter' colour with Pirelli 'P Zero' 205/45 ZR17 tyres
PIAA front driving light conversion for the fog lights
Prodrive quick shift
Roof-mounted map reading lamps
Special, RB5 side and rear decals (and also on driving light covers)
Special, RB5 embossed carpet mats
Special, RB5 interior-mounted, numbered plaque "Limited Edition" only 444 available!

WR Sport Version

Prodrive High wing (similar to the new STi 5 but with the brake light on the wing rather than boot lid)
New ECU, exhaust, and air filter
Inter-cooler piping

Unless an owner has upgraded the suspension, then it's exactly the same as any MY99/00 car under the skin. Performance is the same (exc. WR Version) and parts are all interchangeable.

I reckon I must own the only Impreza P1 that has only had 2 owners from new, with me being the 2nd!!

And the engine is so strong if looked after - never missed a beat, totally standard and over 300bhp with only an STi air filter and fuel pump change!

Curious but why an RB5, they are just a Turbo 2000 with some clever marketing aren't they.

Apart from the P1 the RB5 was the only UK car based on an STi shell and chassis, the RB used a Version 5 fixed shell with rear seats that wouldn't fold and therefore made the car more rigid. Also the RB5 came in steel blue which was an import only colour. It didn't have as much input from prodrive as the P1 with regards to suspension and ran a Turbo 2000 engine. The main reason the RB5 was so special was because it celebrated the late Richard Burns winning the WRC.
Almost - The RB5 was a special that Subaru released when Burn's signed for them (he was number 5), as he won the WRC with the WRC2001 (Bugeye shape) the RB320 was then a special edition released a year after his death.

I think the reason the RB5 is revered so much is that most of them came with the PPP kit (not all, I know) and to find that on a standard T2000 is a rare thing indeed. This and the unique body colour/interior made them really standout. That and the chassis details already mentioned, I think EVO said it was the best handling Impreza (at the time) they'd ever tested? The P1 is known for being a bit stiffly sprung for our roads...

And finally, it'd be rude not to put up a pic of mine smile

I think it's a fine line between a decent exhaust note and them sounding completely OTT and barried.

Just bought a classic wagon, and exhaust mods are on the agenda, I just don't want it to sound like I live ona council estate! wink

I know the equal length manifolds stop the Subaru rumble, but they are much better for power and torque. It's a difficult decision! Some of the ebay systems are also not very much money either, and there is a lot of stuff around second hand as well, just to make things more difficult!
I've got a TSL Group N on mine, and full decat, which is a nice balance. Not too loud, but a real rally-esque exhaust note with more of a rasp than the usual growl (neighbour has a Nur Spec R which is just silly loud) and plenty of drama on the overrun when it's hot!

Awesome point-to-point machine that I was lucky enough to have owned 2008 - 2010. For me the most desirable car ever to have come out of Japan. With all that performance, iconic looks and rarity (only 424 ever built I think), surely mint, unmodified ones must be the next big thing to shoot up in value?
To be fair they've never really dropped in value that much have they? Sure they are likely to creep up as time goes by though, especially those closer to standard.

I'm a newage Impreza owner, but I've been fighting the urge to buy a classic Impreza for some time now. Would love to make it a 22B, but its just too much for my wallet. One day...

NICE! My Scoob (an '05 STi) was my daily driver, but I bought a diesel a few months ago and have subsequently made the Scoob my weekend toy.

Given its just a weekend toy now I don't need practical interior etc., (plus I've always wanted a stripped out, rally-esque road rocket!) and it was the two door classic that made me want a Scoob in the first place, so I thought about doing the above together. Problem is the newages seem to be selling for not much more than the Type R's are going for these days, so it seems foolish to sell up a 7 year old car to buy a 14 year old one (which I'm then going to pull apart!).

I suppose the irony here is, the stats posted 2 posts above yours mention no chassis or suspension changes at all, bar some 17" alloys. Meaning it should handle exactly the same as any other T2000 of the same period.

Lovely car though smile

I love the TFT video. One I've watched before, and the sound of the cars is amazing. I love these old Imprezas - they just don't make them like that anymore! I was looking to buy a Series McRae Impreza at the very start of this year. Sadly, it had sold when I contacted the caller. frown

Not many 1994-2000 ("classics") model Imprezas left now, or rather, ones that you would want to buy/own - I found one for sale when I was looking a few months ago, but alas I was too slow to get to view and it was sold.

This one was probably the pick of them. It was just so...1995. The Recaro seats with the blue and pink design on them, how cool! The one I was looking at had had loads of work done on it, pretty much everything replaced and the owner sounded like a good bloke, rather than the usual knuckledraggers unfortunately associated with these cars. Shame it sold. It would have been a better car than my GX.

Need to adjust that a little. 1992-2000. Not available in the uk until 94, but imports out there from late 92.

That's how I remember them, hearing them miles in the distance as I stood atop of the hill at Temple Newsam in the early winter when I was about 13 then suddenly seeing the lights peaking as they came closer then being hit with a cacophony of warble, crackle, spit, hiss only for it to be repeated

Happy days

This was when rallying was at it's peak for me

Thanks - can't believe I was so stupid to forget 1992 (especially as the Imprezas 20th Anniversary was held at Provdrive during the summer of 2012)!
