I have to admit that (to me) the last 10 years or so of the 911 they have all looked almost identical and more "facelift" than new model.
That being said I simply CANNOT imagine it looking any other way. Its an iconic style that is deservedly legendary.
Porsche tried to replace the 911 with the 928 and (I love 928's too) it was a bit of a limp squib in the replacement stakes.
Where Porsche are failing horrendously is that ALL of their models look like the 911. the Caymen, Boxter, Cayenne and Panamera all look like stretched, shrunk, pulled and inflated 911 and its more than just styling cues that that are found on other brands (although IMO Audi are guilty of being very unimaginative with styling variations).
My 2p worth

The 911 may for some (not me) may be a classic shape and timeless wonder, but too make EVERY other car in the range evoke some aspect of the 911, is just either incredibly arrogant or incredibly lazy!

Can't buy in to the whole new 911 lookey-likey thing. When ever I see image shots like this, I think the chap is an Architect, has a tall designer clad elegant wife named Astrid, two young kids, drives to 'inspiring' offices in the local city, lives in a house that looks like nothing more than a series of white boxes stuck upon each other, commutes through forests to work and takes holidays in remote places that have Camels and Llamas for transport. You see, that's ok. In fact, that's not a bad image at all to hold.
It's the UK equivalent that spoils it.
Lives in Surrey, drives through west London down the M4 to offices in Hammersmith. Eats at Subway, takes camping holidays in North Wales and his wife Tracey and the two kids Chlamydia and Speculum are ferried to school in a tdi Sline Toureg.
Pass me an Air cooled in Aegean blue please (yes, you know who you are, you promised it to me. I have NOT forgotten!)
FWIW, I'm fond of the new choccy 911 because it's a modern, and less costly, take on...
IIRC, John Watson owned/owns a restored RS in the same colour.

I really do love 911s, this ones mine!
Gratuitous showing off of my own car not withstanding, I think each model is different enough to have a style and desirability of their own.
Er...I have no idea if that is a 996, 997 or 991.I really do love 911s, this ones mine!

This perception of the 911 (and cars in general?) could be expected from someone who see's cars as a slightly better alternative to walking and goes a long way to explaining the vast amounts of average dross that clutters our road networks, but I'm worried by your statement.

These are all the same car with a respray and a bit of chrome removed from the front arent they, admit it But it's the different models on the same chassis that confuse me, you have GT2s, GT3s, Turbos, Carreras and Carrera 4s etc. etc. At a glance it is very hard to tell which is which without walking around the back of one to see what badge it's wearing.
They're still ugly though, in my own opinion.

Sounds like the sort of thing my Mum would say. Fine if you believe that the design philosophy has stayed the same for too long, that's a matter of opinion and a debate in itself. But to openly admit you think they all look the same? You really can't tell the differences? Are you sure you are on the right forum?

Can't tell? Kindly hand in your PH membership card on the way out. There are a few simple rules of thumb to identify most of the models.
3.2 Carrera: that 80's, often whale-tailed blob that you see a lot in cheesy 80's movies
964: less garish with one piece bumpers
993: The nicest looking one in non-Turbo form (IMHO). The only model that catches my attention.
996: The one with the Boxster headlamps and the first with the awful "dog with worms" rear 3/4
997: Like the 996 but back to non-Boxster headlamps
991: The better looking of the water-cooled models

Ok the 'are you high' comment was unneccesary so apologies for that but come on they all look way too similar
Look in your rear view mirror and any and I mean any AUDI will look the same......As does Aston Martins..... is it a DB9? a Vanquish or a DBS... Is it a V8S or a V8 or...... V12
Same goes for Mini ......
Many cannot tell the difference between a 360 and a 430.
Don't get me started on BMW's
You'll find these companies know more about their customer base (KYC) and what sells than anyone on PH...
It's a bit of a non story really

Each 911 does not have its own style, they all have 1 style... sporty beetle

People who can`t tell the difference between things is why we also have st on supermarket shelves!
With respect of course!
Not been a huge fan of the 911 look in recent years but I've got to say that 991 C4 front end looks rather nice.
but I'm not a fan of the rear. It looks a mishmash and far too busy. Too many badges and I'm seeing Aston rear lights with an Audi TT bumper. A shame because the front is one of the best looking 911's I've seen for a very long time.

I love Porsches and I can tell the difference between the models.
But I can fully understand why others can't. A lot of people genuinely do not know the difference.
Also I don't really understand what people expect Porsche to do with it, it is the same model, it is going to look similar and unless there is something wrong then why would they go and radically change it.

I love all 911's, and have from the moment I was given a ride in a 930 a long, long time ago.
For me, well, the looks are not the primary concern- as long as it looks sufficiently like the model before it-ie so it is instantly recognizable as a 911- its fine. For me, it must still do everything that the predecessors did- be quick, reliable, relatively practical, and have character.
Granted, in my eyes a great deal of that was lost when they changed to a water cooled engine but in fairness they have been in production now for long enough for the company to know what the buyer wants. How many other cars can you name that are still instantly recognizable from one made in the 60's that are still in demand, relatively affordable, and still have a competitive race version? Not too many. The Land Rover (Defender) would stand comparison, and I would argue that is they change it too radically, it will cease to be the thing that many want it to be.
Granted, there have been various things not done to everyone's tastes over the years- parts sharing with other models in the range and so on, and Porsche itself hasn't had the steadiest of financial pasts, but they are by no means the only manufacturer to share parts.
The older models are increasing in value- the 'legendary' '73RS will no doubt continue to climb, the 964 RS allows folk to kick themselves for not buying one a few years ago. The 996 GT2 will no doubt follow the trend soon enough, due mainly to the engine in the back of it. They remain an accomplished, fast, thrilling car, yet they retain everyday usability.
I rated mine not because of the inherent 'faults' with engine location, but because of it- they drive in a way that no other car does, and when you have lived with one for a while, not much else will do as a replacement.
Personally, given the pick of any, it would be a 964 turbo, but would be happy in anything from a 912 to the latest.
Basically, if they change it too much, then it would cease to be a 911- they continue to perform to class leading standards, remain desirable and have a huge following. It would be a shame to undo that with a styling change after 50 years.
