As a regular marshal (BRSCC) at Brands in the 1970's, the rally cross events were one of our 'must attend' meetings. It always produced enormous crowds, even on cold wintery days. The racing was just sensational. Bring it back ASAP.

Have been going to Lydden alot over the last 4 - 5 years, and Brands a few times when they ran it fairly recently there. The racing is superb, alot of action in one way or another, and at Lydden you can wander around the paddock and get up close and personal with the cars (and the drivers too)

The european rounds are quite interesting, alot of scandinavians still use old volvos that have no real right to go quite as well as they do! If you get the chance to go along to one, do so, cheap ish day out of motorsport, and at Lydden if its cold you can sit in your car and watch most of the race (bar the hairpin)

I used to watch rallycross at Cadwell and it was AWESOME! The short circuit was used running the wrong way and taking in the large grass banking between Coppice and Mansfield. Happy memories...

I remember watching a truck race on a beach with him in. Never really got that though, it wasn't as exciting as watching Steve Parrish in his green Merc truck on a circuit.

Oh yes, definately one of the Rallycross legends of the 1970's era.

And IIRC, that Daf was BDA powered laugh

Well the odd race when there are only 3 saxo's and 2 of them clash at turn one can result in this, but that's a 1 in 20 event, if that!

Another poster asked about the lack of Group B stuff. Well I think that the 6R4 is still about and as said the RS200 only got tucked up up a few years ago. Quite simply there are not many of them still about, not many parts left on the shelves, values are going up and up and most importantly the newer cars are often quicker. That said there are some very mad scandinavians with madder Volvos about still!

Group B cars largely disappeared once their homologation expired and they thus became ineligable to compete in the ERC.
The bigger expense of running them for just limited national events meant most drivers moved away from them relatively quickly.

This doesn't read like a particuarly well researched article, but none-the-less great to see Pistonheads giving rallycross a shout out.

As has been said Channel 4 have been showing highlight programmes of the British Rallycross Championship for the last couple of years.

The European Rallycross Championship is regularly shown on Motors TV, the programme maker has recently started uploading full programmes to You Tube, you can see them here:

The ERC is still the pinnacle of rallycross and, although the cars may not be as evocative as they used to be, the racing is still some of the most exciting out there. Just a pity so many (including those at Pistonheads!) aren't aware of it.

I agree, and I'm not sure how running recent WRC cars in the series would help seeing as they're a) slower than current Rallycross super cars and b) nobody watches WRC currently anyway.

3/10 PH, must try harder.

Moreover, with conventional rallying at present struggling for TV viewers, could rallycross perhaps raise its profile by using recent WRC/IRC cars?
Dear person who wrote this,

This video is from over 20 years ago.

Please try to find out at least a couple of tiny facts about the subject before uploading your 'articles'. ERC (that's the very popular ERC) has a large number of ex-WRC and ex-IRC cars in it already - except they're a lot faster because they run a lot more power.

All you had to do was spend two minutes looking at the ERC website ( http://erc24.com/archives/category/gallery/2012pho...) and you would see a large number of C4s, Focuses, Fabias etc.

I swear the content on here is getting worse by the week. It's so ill-informed as to be almost laughable sometimes (particularly with regard to motorsport), until you realise people are being paid to write it...

Yeah, they were ineligable to run in the ERC, but still allowed in some National Championship. I believe the BRC is the last Championship to allow them to run but, as said above, the last two cars running (Pat Dorans RS200 and Laurence Gibsons 6R4) have disappeared from the grids the last couple of years. Doran bought newer machinery (and the newer rules seemed to render the RS200 less competitive) and I understand Gibson was finding the running of the 6R4 difficult.

Back on topic, a +1 for this...

I've only been really into rallycross for the last 6 or 7 years, but one thing that has struck me in that time is that promotion does seem to be a bit of a problem, with many casual viewers thinking the sport died out when it stopped receiving mainstream coverage. I assumed that the motoring experts at Pistonheads would know better, but obviously not...

...perhaps another "Time for Tea" with a modern rallycross race Pistonheads? And this time with a little bit more research. wink

I have to say, this is one of the best videos I have watched on Youtube, Both visually and from the fantastic commentators. I'm sure I can remember watching Rallycross on World of Sport as a kid.
