Hey,

I'm new on here and I need a bit of advice. I'm a third year psychology student at Newcastle University and I'm doing my dissertation on how overconfidence and personality may affect risky driving behaviour. I think the results could be quite interesting seeing as new EU legislation that comes into effect at the end of Dec means that insurance companies won't be able to discriminate against gender. They'll have to find other ways to crank up our premiums instead!! Personality may be one of the ways that they do this, although how they'd implement it in real life maybe an issue.

I am desperately trying to recruit people to take part in my questionnaire (for which you could win £20 worth of vouchers). I'd really like to get a range of individuals and not just use students as it means that my results will be more reliable.

However, having read the rules on posting, I know I can't just post the link to my questionnaire in here and that I should try and go through "normal" channels but don't know what those normal channels would be? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks! smile

Seen many people asking for volunteers for questionaires on here before. They normally just post a link to the site and i havent ever seen any issues. Dont take that as read though i dont know the rules. Happy to help out though. PM me if you are worried about posting a link on here.

I fear your results might be a bit skewed unless you use plenty of other sources, most people on here think they're God's gift to driving.

I don't think a self-selected sample from a motoring enthusiast website is going to be representative - if I were you, I would try to recruit from somewhere with nothing to do with cars or driving.

Isnt that kinda the point though? I read it as the op wants to know about attitudes towards ability being related to insurance risk.

If you want to know if driving gods crash more then where better to ask than PH where everybodyy is a driving god?

(except me)

But he's looking for people who are over-confident - PH is probably the best place to come really.

Driving Gods may be inclined to push cars harder than non-god-like Drivers...

...but, said Driving Gods may(or may not...) have more idea about what to do in the event of a "situation" involving poor driving conditions.

Courteous, empathetic, observant, mechanically sympathetic, knowledgeable, practised drivers of at least moderate talent are possibly the lowest "risk".

Most people really are "above average" drivers. The reason being is that they use different metrics.
So someone who drives slow will think they're better than average because they think slow = good and that's what they do.
Fast drivers will think they're better than average because they think that fast = good and that's what they do.

So it's entirely possible (and indeed likely) that >50% of people really are 'Above Average', just because of the metrics. smile

Quick question; how do you distinguish between confidence and overconfidence?

Err, what's the difference between these two?

What if I am a driving god, but a benevolent one, always keeping my Red Bull cans dry?

OP, you had a few questions like 'People should drive slower than the speed limit when it is raining'. This conflates several issues - perhaps intentionally, but it meant I couldn't answer them.

Do us a favour

We get this almost weekly

No one has ever come back and told us the results

At least have the decency to return once you have reached a conclusion

It's a text based entry so you can put whatever units you think are right, however to avoid confusion in the future I've asked for the length in miles.

Thanks!
