I went out last night and could have sworn it was a 24 hour car park. It wasn't and closed at midnight. There's no notice outside telling me how much this costly mistake will potentially set me back.
Dare I ask if this has happened to anyone?

NCP have a standard fine if £1000 in this circumstance. You will find your car is clamped also until you pay.

There was one where I parked and again didn't know it wasn't 24 hours. I was in a hotel next door, and got to the car park at 0630, for it not to open until 0700. By then a small queue of hopefuls like me had gathered to retrieve their cars. Grrr.

It almost happened to me in Watford once. I was designated driver for a works do, driving the guvner's car. We went to Jongluers. As I tried to retrieve the car I could see the garage was locked up. Luckily the security guard let me out.

Happen to me in Newcastle , got there about 2 minutes late just as the guy was locking up , it's amazing what a fiver will make some people do.

A few bob for him , me saving a taxi home and a pain in the arse going back in the morning.

Never been late again mind.

They`ll charge you the maximum rate for a full day in that car park I think.

Which car park? The pheonix one? I did the same thing there 5 years or so back. There was a security guard in the hut, a swift tenner had me out without paying the charge for my actual parking

Lucky sod. It did happen to me in Watford once, 2004/2005, after a visit to Jongleurs. Parked in the Queens car park, paid no heed to the time, back to car park, locked, relieved of £10 by guard, on my way.

If your car is a decent car I would expect it to be at the docks in a container marked 'Destination Africa' by now.............

We once got not locked but trapped in a car park in Oxford on a Sunday afternoon many years ago. There was a queue building up of cars trying to get out because none of the ticket machines were working, there was no attendant or security on site, and the call buttons on the machines elicited no response. My dad got his toolkit out of the car, removed one of the automatic barriers from its hinge, waved at the CCTV, and everyone drove out smile

Walk up to ticket barrier at entrance. Get new ticket. Use new ticket to get back out.

(Might not work)

My local shopping centre fked up somewhat last weekend.

They had an event which drew in literally, tens of thousands of people many of whom parked in the centres car park.

The problems occurred when they tried to leave the centre - the timing was out on the traffic lights upside which were programmed to only let out 2 cars at a time as the centres management forgot to recalibrate the lights for the weekend.

As the car park merges onto a busy main road no-one could actually get out of the car park which created 'slight' delays....

People were queuing for up to 4 hours to get to the barrier - & then they had more problems because the car park is one of those stupid places where you pay for the time you had parked before you get to your car.

So when the tickets were presented to the machine it wouldn't accept them because the timing was so far adrift!!!

The management initially told people they would have to pay for the time they had spent sitting in the queue to get out - which was caused by the centre management not recalibrating the traffic lights.

They eventually relented, after plod were called because one irate motorist threatened to take a chain saw from his boot & chop the barrier into pieces! - by leaving the barrier permantly open for the rest of the day & by turning off the traffic lights.

Even after doing that the people at the back of the queue were still taking up to 4 hours to get out.

Almost, mate drives up to barrier, takes ticket, reverses, drives back to barrier takes another ticket, then you both drive out within the 10 minute grace period.

I've tried this before after a long spell of parking. Thinking if I get a fresh ticket, less time, less cash spent. Didn't work. If your the weight of a small car you might be lucky but my body weight didn't register the sensor.

The sensors detect metal not weight.

Is that true? If so that is a brilliant bit of trivia.

Given your name as this in Leicester? If so, I normally park in the street after 6pm at night usually round the back of Granby St/Belvoir St area.

As I recall, I made it up to the car but all the barriers were closed. I drove to the barriers, hoping they'd open. No luck. Fortunately, the guard came to investigate and let me out.
