Is that true? If so that is a brilliant bit of trivia.
It's true. It's an induction loop under the concrete. Google "inductive loop vehicle detectors"...

Certainly. You need a fairly large peice of steel to fool them though, one of those lightweight manhole covers will do it, don't ask smile

We once got not locked but trapped in a car park in Oxford on a Sunday afternoon many years ago. There was a queue building up of cars trying to get out because none of the ticket machines were working, there was no attendant or security on site, and the call buttons on the machines elicited no response. My dad got his toolkit out of the car, removed one of the automatic barriers from its hinge, waved at the CCTV, and everyone drove out smile
This is far more civilised procedure than the central Bristol one, I'm forever seeing very clear CCTV images of mongs lifting the barrier to let their drink-driving mates out. And expensively breaking it in the process...

Ref the inductive loops, if you put a big enough bit of metal across 2 edges of the loop its usually enough to trigger it. Shopping trolley on its side if one comes to hand....

Got trapped in a local car park a while ago, my EP3 and my old bosses GTR, no one could/would let us out but fortunately it appears someone had the same issue in the past and had created a gap in the fence, cue 5 or 6 of us contstructiing a ramp out of a few bits of wood and odds n sods found on the car park to get a hot hatch that's very low and the GTR over a high kerb to escape hehe

Given your name as this in Leicester? If so, I normally park in the street after 6pm at night usually round the back of Granby St/Belvoir St area.
I used to live in Leicester, brave man leaving your car any where near Beaver street after dark.

Never had any bother in 14 years leaving my car in that area.
