Focus ST2/3 what to look out for?
Discussion
I'll be on the look out for a focus st2 or 3 in the next month or 2, I've heard they are good solid motors but as with anything so complex, minor faults can be common so what should I look out for when going to see potentials? Looking at spending around 8k tops so probably between 2006 - 2008.
Any advice much appreciated.

- Older cars have older oil filter housings, which if you mod the car, the diaphrgam inside can burst, and if you boost it too much after that it'll suck oil through teh camshaft oil seals, if you don't boost it' it will be fine, but cost you a morning and about £150 to fix.
- Alternators are known to go on the Focus, hasn't on mine yet *fingers crossed*
- The oil in the front wishbone bushes usually perish, mines and 07 plate, and when the polybushes were fitted at the start of the year, the oil was non-existant.
- Drivers CV boot has went on mine, and a few cars up here.
- Bonnet can sometimes jam due to the way the mechanism to open it is manufactured.
Other than that should be fine, people will come in and try and scare monger you with talk of splint cylinder liners when it's modded, but it's all speculative, standard cars have blown, modded cars have blown, loads of people have ran over 300BHP without probelm, mine ran over 300BHP for over a year before it went, but even then that was due to something pressurising the water system and radiator, then it dumping all it's coolant and cooking itself to death, nothing to do with the engine itself.
So just ask if things like teh alternator, oil filter housing, front bushes have been changed, and you should be fine, pretty solid cars overall.

Common fault on drivers seat. The seat frame can snap on one of the welds (pre faceliift cars).
On facelift cars the bushes on the seat either side of the seat base wear causing movement. Easy fix (modified bushes/ spacers available from Ford) but annoying. Fault rectified on cars from late 09 onwards.
Cynical Recaro branding (the seats are Ghia seats rebranded but comfy nevertheless).
Do yourself a favour if you are considering an ST; get yourself to Focus ST owners club. It's an excellent forum and there is nothing the boys on there do not know about ST's.
Oh, and expect early twenties MPG.

Ta! i'll get over there and check it out. MPG isn't really an issue it will be for pleasure only circa 3000 p/a. I picked up an 07 model a couple of months ago (see thread).
One of the best cars i've owned (i've had a few).
Quick, comfortable and does everything I want it to very well. Fuel economy round town is mid 20's...but on a very steady long run I acheived 36mpg. I average around 28-29 in normal use.

Not sure where you got that from but you are certainly mistaken there. They are proper Recaro seats, the ghia leather seats are completely different.Edited by rb5er on Saturday 8th December 21:26
