RE: Spotted: Alfa 147 GTA

Of course it's subjective but you can get a 2009 Mazda 3 mps for this money on eBay now, I agree not as much character but a better car by most accounts.
Or how about a e46 m3 or if you can suffer impracticality you can just about get a s1 Elise
As much character as this car has I would have to consider the other options and I'd always opt for the others
I have to ask would anyone chose this over something like a m3 something else in this price bracket ?
That is a very easy question Alfa GTA every time. BMW M3 lol and you also mentioned a Mazda you are a funny man!!! :-) Or how about a e46 m3 or if you can suffer impracticality you can just about get a s1 Elise

I would, every time.I've owned an E36 328 and regularly drive a new 330 and they are very fine cars, objectively miles better than that old Alfa.
But the Alfas have oodles of character and are lovely old things.

Of course it comes down to personal opinion but a 147 Gta is bad choice at they price. For a lot less money you can get a civic type r or a focus even a focus RS obviously not everyone's taste but better cars in most people's opinion in every aspect apart from noise maybe
Personally I'd not buy any of what I've mentioned except maybe the M3, then are undeniably a great car but at that price bracket it would be a shady example but I'd probably look at something bigger like a e39 m5 and pocket a big chunk of cash.
Do consider other cars at this price
Integra type r
Civic type r
Focus RS
M5
M3
S1 Elise
If your wiling to sacrifice age and practicality the option list is huge though some of these cars are not to everyone's taste it's still hard to not consider them
R32/33 gtr
Jaguar s type r
Audi s4/s6/s2
Porsche boxster
Just about a porsche 911
Early monaro
Toyota supra
Mazda rx7/8
Really nice impreza
Mitsubishi evo
Anyone want to add to the list?
I recon I'd go for a nice late evo over the Gta out of that list

i always liked 156GTA more than 147, somehow its better proportioned in my eyes
Yes, I had a 156 GTA for two years and loved it. Looked ace in black with black and tan seats. Drove it out to Moscow and back, in the interim subjecting it to two Russian winters without suffering any mechanical failures beyond a flat battery (killed by the extreme cold) so the Alfa naysayers can stick that in their hoary old pipes and smoke it.Its lasting legacy is that I now insist on only owning cars whose engines sound at least half-decent. That V6 spoils you rotten, aurally-speaking! The GM V6 in the 159/Brera is wildly inferior in that respect.
I would love a GTA version of an Alfa at some point. Currently I have a GTV which I LOVE.
Funny thing (well it isn't funny really) is that someone took the 3 litre out of it and put a 2.5 in.
Autolusso pointed this out to me when my car was in with them for an exhaust upgrade. You can't tell unless you look at the engine block from underneath the car with a torch.
I have yet to find a better engine than the busso V6. I need to drive a Honda NSX or M3 maybe....

I love 147 GTAs. Think of them as a modern Giulia GTA and you won't go far wrong - there, I've said it! We have two in my family. The steering is the best feature - ultra quick and direct. And, as others have said, there's a lovely engine that revs to 7,200 so quickly and smoothly. Handling and road holding at speed are excellent if you take a moment to balance the car before turning in. Well looked after they last really well. One of ours has over 90,000 miles and drives perfectly. Alfa imported less than 350 and there are barely 300 left. We're keeping both of ours.
The E46 M3 is very practical... actually, as is the coupe, which has rear folding seats, both do well over 30mpg on motorways and 24.9mpg of mixed driving in my case.
The 147 GTA is very comfortable, goes like a stabbed rat and still looks beautiful today, when many of its box shaped contemporaries don't. Never ever had any reliability issues with my Alfa through 60,000 miles of driving either.

It amuses me how these threads get turned into what "other cars" you could have for the money! They are simply gorgeous cars I remember my dad taking me out in one when they were first launched, I was very impressed seemed so quick, I was 16 at the time and was probably the fastest car I had been in at the time! If I find my self wanting a four seater car that would be on the top of my list with the Alfa GT!

I've put a Q2 diff and some later ARBs on my 2.0l 147 and it really did transform the balance (had the same mods on my previous 1.6 TS too).
My eternal excuse to myself to not take the plunge on a GTA is that the engine is something like 100kg heavier than the Twin Spark unit. Plus with an eternally blowing exhaust my little 4-pot can sound pretty good
It's a fight I'm losing though and this article is hardly helping, especially as I've got the chassis bits it's talking about ready to go!
My apologies for mentioning economy, and it isn't a real issue for the driving I do, but a good mate sold his after a year of seeing 14 MPG average in mixed driving.
Also, hoping somebody knows who the incredibly gorgeous brunette is that drives a black GTA around Tunbridge Wells like she stole it, I'd love to go for a ride sometime
not sure what you paid for, because the Q2 diff can't be fitted to the twin spark engines !My eternal excuse to myself to not take the plunge on a GTA is that the engine is something like 100kg heavier than the Twin Spark unit. Unless you really have to have all that power, then the 2.5 V6 is the nicer engine.
It sounds better and revs harder than the 3.2, even though it can't compare in the power stakes.
I've owned two 3.2 GTVs and the power really does corrupt the chassis and detract from the pleasure, though my second one had a Q2 and was much better.
My daily snotter is a 156 with the 2.5 V6 and it is a lovely compromise, far nicer to drive than either of the GTVs.
For what it's worth, both GTVs and the 156 have been completely reliable.
But whilst I prefer the 2.5, all versions of the Arese V6 are magnificent.
I've owned Lotus Twinks, Rover/TVR V8s, a Ferrari V8, and BMW Sixes and in my humble opinion the Alfa V6 knocks them all into a cocked hat.
My 156 has covered 60,000 miles and is probably worth less than a grand.
That interior looks lovely. Always thought Alfa leather is top quality. It sounds better and revs harder than the 3.2, even though it can't compare in the power stakes.

I was offered a similar age 2.5V6 with c25k on the clock for £1,800. Wasn't in the market but thought it would have been a great buy.

Just sold my 147 GTA back to its original owner 2 weeks ago. Love these cars.
The 156 GTA handles better though. But the 147 GTA is so comfortable and looks nicer. I will have another one at some point soon.
I've had 3 now!

Stunning car, I love the blue colour on the 147, looks brilliant. Wonder if there was a 147 GTA with the face lifted front end?
I went to buy a 2nd hand GTV 3.0 V6 back in 2006 and ended up with a 147GTA.
loved it, had the brakes upgraded to the bigger front 330mm's but never got around to the Q2 and sorting the suspension. Ran it for 3 years and only replaced the radiator over and above normal servicing, labour on the brake upgrade was paid for by AlfaUK - its a well known issue.
Now have the GTV V6. Previous owner had fitted koni shocks and springs and I've had a quaiffe diff (similar to the Alfa Q2) and the lighter GTA clutch fitted. Its a massive transformation . Comaring the 2, I'd say the GTV feels more special being a smaller coupe than a hot hatch
