My feeling is that the praise is from people who admire or want a good car, the complaints from those who are far more interested in brand attributes and other pretentious drivel.
If there was a correlation at all, I'd have said it was the opposite. hehe

Personally, I suspect the difference is just in aesthetic taste and priorities.

Personally I respect the direction BMW have taken with their M-cars, but I don't like it.

As an M car fan, I wouldn't say they've changed direction at all. They've always been fully laden examples of the going series with a better chassis set up and a stonking engine. It's just cars in general have gotten heavier because of safety regs AND its what the average consumer wants.

Look at the original M5. It was as heavy as a bottom end 7 series of the time, yet I never hear anyone complaining about that, today is no different in that sense.

I didn't mean that the differences between M-cars and other BMWs have changed or even that the focus of the M-division as an organisation has changed (although I think it has changed a bit as the target markets have evolved). I said that the focus of M-cars themselves has changed, and I stand by that. Yes, the whole market has changed in that direction, but on the other hand M-division are quite unusual amongst mainstream manufacturers' products in having ever produced cars that I liked.

They may have fallen no further in terms of driver focus than the rest of the market, but they've fallen from a greater height which, to my mind, makes it worse.

It's too heavy, it's not an M car, it's not NA, why is it called a 6 series when it has 4 doors, blah blah blah? NONE of that will matter when I am wafting in comfort down to the south of France with family in tow, a raft of toys in it to keep us amused\comfortable and that 560bhp V8 twin turbo to keep me company, you know, like the uber GT car it's supposed to be and all for £35k wink

+1 to this.

The other favourite that has been trotted out all through this thread is 'marketing'. That 'marketing' is ruining everything. I'm sorry, but the entire car industry always has, and always will be driven by marketing. Manufacturers exist to sell us cars. Not to build cars, not to 'stir our soul' as someone posted earlier, but to SELL cars.

People like us are different - we have a passion for the cars that most people don't have. We are not the target market for these companies, and we shouldn't be. If they made cars for us, they'd be out of business...

[not least because everyone on here disagrees with buying new car - "Can't believe someone would pay £30k for a hot hatch, I'll have one in 3 years" - I hate to tell you, if noone buys it new, there will be no 3-year old cars for sale. Maybe there's money to be made there actually - "Hmmmm it's a little too expensive, have you got any used for sale?" "Lucky for you, there are some 3 year old cars rolling off the production line right now, you're in luck"]

...because they need the volumes to stay in business. We should enjoy the choice that we have in the market and buy the stuff that we like - rather than sitting on these forums and slagging off the majority of new cars launched, just cause they aren't 800kg with screaming NA engines and 7 minute Ring times.

Rant over.

If the hookers were touted as being stunners straight outta a fashion parade but the reality was they all weighed 20 stone had facial hair, boss eyes and snaggle teeth.
Sheeet, Id complain too. And rightly so.
WHY?
No-one respects a liar.

Theres no respect for companies and their Marketing c***s who study ways to improve their constant lying and greed.
THAT irks people.

These companies are constantly being deceitful and shamelessly greedy when there is no need for it, and for that they deserve a mocking.
And thats what theyre receiving.

For me the main issue with these lard-mobiles are the tall tales of lardy st heaps that are performance cars, supercars and sports cars, blah blah, basically ANYTHING that they can invent a turd into that costs a bit extra. Just to get a 'premium'. Its pathetic.
At least they could be semi-decent and sell what theyre claiming they have built. Its boring and logic dictates smoke and mirrors only works on idiots.
The truth is these cars are such rediculous monstrosities and so over-rated they lose a minimum of £10,000 just leaving the forecourt.

What we are asking is for the liars to tell the truth.
These vehicles are quite obviously dull executive barges. Mediocre at best.
So call them executive barges.
Tell it like it is or stop whining and take the mocking that you deserve like a man.

Yes - if you have a look at his other posts, 90% of them are the same thing.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like the rantings of someone who never has, and never will, have the opportunity to drive this sort of car. Whether it's a car you like or not, you can't claim that any car built by BMW (or any other major manufacturer) and selling for the price this M6 sells for is a "rediculous" [sic] "turd".

In fact, I'd argue that no manufacturer is turning out a "turd" these days, no matter what the price. All cars are good, it's just how good and what you're looking for that makes the difference.

I think you are referring to the M6 Gran Coupe.

If I may be so bold, I don't understand the basis of the above quotation. Not only have you never driven the car, but there is also the fact that ///M has always been about a fully loaded 3/5/6/Roadster series with chassis and performance modifications. There aren't any ///M owners on here who complain about that either.

An interesting fact I found earlier too:

E30 M3 kerb weight: 1300KG

E30 316i kerb weight: Approx 1100KG.

And yet how many times has the E30 M3 been referred to as the holy grail of M cars because it's "so incredibly light and not a typical ///M lard-arse"

Go figure.

BMW managed to combine balanced proportions with handling characteristics with all their previous cars prior to the current range*, so don't understand why they can't do so now. e30's, e36's, e39's, e60's, e90's, even e63's didn't suffer the enormo-nose that the current 3, 5 and 6 series have been inflicted with

  • z cars excepted of course, as the long thrusting bonnet was on purpose
