Seems a bit pointless what exactly does this do that a M5 does not ?

I would rather have a E39 M5 or E60/E61 M5 over this.

If I had 100k would prefer a E39 M5 and E63 M6 combination :-)

All the way back to the E34 M5 they've been fully-loaded versions of the regular model, with various tweaks to make them handle better, be nicer to drive and (obviously) with more power from a bespoke engine. The E39 M5 (for example) weighs about 1850kg, but I've not heard anyone moan about that being too heavy.

Personally I like the looks of the M6 Gran Coupe.
exactly.

more PH members moaning about how having more choice is bad, how unusual.

again - PH : a lack of choice matters

Agree this nameing thing is getting a bit silly now to be honest. Why didn't they just call it the M7, would have at least made a bit of sense then.
I think they have that number reserved for a reason, might need to add "M" to the 7 to competer with the S8 in China ect...there M, S or RS is just "the expensive one" and nothing to do with history or nostalgia. As if you couldn't tell the V12 Biturbo was the expensive one frown

If this is a 4-door coupe which is like a 5 series but with a more curvacious roof line, what in God's name is the point of the 5 series GT ( http://www.bmw.co.uk/en/new-vehicles/5/gran-turism...)?

Nice car, but £100k? Seriously, who buys these things?

I'm just not sure what the point of this constant micro-differentiation is. Want a large, fast 4 door saloon? M5. Want a large, fast 2 door coupe? M6. I just don't see why this needs to exist, or possibly why the M5 needs to exist if this does too... I don't see why you'd buy one instead of the other for anything other than price. Does the 6 look a bit better? Yes, a BIT. Is the 5 a bit more practical? Yes.. A BIT. Not enough for me to really chose between them either way.
The inside of this is pretty spacious to be fair, I'm 6'3 and fit behind my own driving position pretty well...that wouldnt happen with a 5. Ferrying wife and kids around? 5. Ferrying adults around? 6. Done wink

BMW seem to be bringing out pointless cars these days. I don't see the point in the X6, 4 series or this 4 door version of the 6 series.....

I'm confused... you are saying this M6 has MORE room in it than the M5? I would have assumed the opposite was true.

I think the new M6 Gran Coupe is much nicer and sexier than any M5 ever has been personally

I would have thought China might be a key market they are looking at....

They even do a stretch 3 series just for China.

It's hideous however many doors it has.

Surely the M5 is a 4 door M6. This car (and many other new BMWs) doesn't make any sense, it's as though they're just filling gaps in the market that aren't really there or are already filled.

I agree. I began to wonder what the M division's marketing department were doing when they made the X6M. As if the X6 wasn't a bad enough idea.

To me, the side profile of this looks incredibly similar to the current 5 series and while I'm a fan of the new rear, I really don't like the front. Sadly not my cup of tea.

Depends what you mean, I prefer the driving position and the interior layout, and there is a lot more legroom. On the minus its narrower at the back so the 5th seat really is useless, and the celing is lower. Less actual space in the 6er, but much more for 4 adults if that makes sense?

They need to drop this engine/chassis set-up in the 5-Series GT abomination to make sure all bases are covered hehe

Valid points. It seems BMW are happy to follow/compete directly with Audi who somehow justify similar levels of differentiation, with the A5 as a 2 and 4-door coupe alongside the A7 4-door coupe. And then we have Mercedes with the CL, CLS and SL. So roughly, from bottom to top:

Audi A1 --- BMW MINI -- Merc A class
Audi A3 --- BMW 1/2 series --- Merc B class
Audi A4 --- BMW 3 series --- Merc C class
Audi A5 --- BMW 4 series --- Merc CL?
Audi A6 --- BMW 5 series --- Merc E class
Audi A7 --- BMW 6 series incl. GC --- Merc SL/CLS
Audi A8 --- BMW 7 series --- Merc S class
Bentley --- Rolls-Royce --- Maybach (defunct)

Obviously this is my interpretation and some cars don't quite fit, e.g the normal 6 series coupe doesn't quite have a direct Audi rival unless you consider the S5 separate to the A5, and the RS5 competing against the M6. But what I do believe is most of these closely-related cars are coming about due to a) reduced cost of more models on very similar hardware b) direct competition - for each micro-niche another fellow manufacturer brings in, the other two German marques always jump in to compete.

A 4 door version, of a 2 door coupe, itself based on a 4 door saloon.
.... and even more interestingly, it ends up being the best looking of the mutations.

How long before they add a shooting break version to the line up, to continue fill every niche we never knew we needed?

Because people will buy it. That's the only reason BMW need.

The new Quattroporte will blow this Grann'y Coupe away in terms of class, style and performance
I can't see it "blowing it away" in terms of performance.
"The more potent engine option will be a new 3.8 litre V8 twin turbo delivering 523bhp and 479lb/ft of torque and good for 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds and 191mph. Under the skin, the new Quattroporte makes extensive use of aluminium (as it does in the body) contributing to a weight loss of around 100kg from the current car, despite the overall length of the Quattroporte growing by 6.4" (and the wheelbase by 4.2" all in the back seats)."

... and don't forget the "old" 4.2 Quattroporte was significantly faster than several more powerful German Saloons as tested by EVO around Bedford
