Might explain why those of us who do live here are quite interested in this Octavia, though wink

The BAM engines (S3, Cupra R) also come with twin intercoolers, rather than one on the vRS, forged internals, and a larger turbo (K04 vs K03 on the vRS). Stating "all VAG 1.8t engines are the same apart from boost pressure" is one of the most frequently used incorrect statements on PH.
I said basic engine, which I stand by. The detail changes to components etc are what make the different variants.

My mk1 octy vRS has the standard turbo fitted and it is a K04 turbo. Only ther very early vRS had a K03 turbo fitted, it is normally used on the 150bHP variantes of the engine.

I know lots of people assume that all VAG 1.8 20V turbo engines are the same apart from power output, one of many misconceptions on here about various things.
If you have a std turbo you DO NOT HAVE A K04. It is a K03s.

I saw a VW Jetta this morning - this car is just one of those with a facelift and a different door set up. The bonnet line is exactly the same.
They may look similar and be around the same size but architecturally they do differ quite significantly. Aside from the obvious fact one is a saloon and the other a hatchback, the Octavia sits on the new MK7 Golf MQB platform whereas the Jetta can be traced back to the MK5 Golf PQ35 setup.

To me the new Octavia on paper at least looks to be a vastly superior car to the Jetta in every measurable way. Even the residual values will likely be better on the Skoda as few people are buying the Jetta. VW would have been better of bringing out a badge engineered version of the Skoda Rapid/ SEAT Toledo for the European market and just pitching it a segment below.

Im a big fan of the Octavia VRS, in fact its high on my list as my next car. What other family car offers such a big boot, good turn of speed etc for the cash? Hopefully the old models will get cheaper too..

One thing, I hope VAG give it the same power output as the VW and Seat models. Always annoyed my that the Octavia got stuck at 197 BHP for the past 6 years when the VW and Seat equivalents got the 210 BHP engine. Were they scared that if they were on equal terms even fewer people would buy the over priced and under achieving Golf GTI MK6?

That is exactly why the car got the lower powered engine (although quite why the Seat got the "better" engines I don't know).
If you specced out a Golf GTI and an Octavia vRS you got a lot more for your money going for the Octavia. SO the lower powered engine was used.
However everyone knows that a software only upgrade will take the 200bhp engine to around 250bhp.
Instead of VW seeing a Skoda sale as a good thing they instead consider every Skoda sale a lost VW sale. People have woken up and realised just what Skoda can offer and for what kind of price.
I've owned 3 Octavia vRS so far and I've got a feeling this may well be number 4.

These seem to have held their value better than you might expect!?

The only thing I could never get away with was the nasty 'BLACK/WHITE' leather/dash treatment and the 'painfully' cramped back seat (it's a Golf - the extra length is all in the boot!!)

I really did expect to find these under £1k for some reason smile

I assume you're talking about the mk1? In which case yes, the rear legroom is the same as the Golf (and is woeful).

The mk2 has massively more space.
