Great shed!

I bought one at the beginning of December, and apart from the above mentioned leaky sunroof, I love it!

Great fun to throw about and surprisingly good on fuel.

It may look a bit chavvy to some but I honestly don't care, at least it hasn't got Lexus lights!

Had a friend who owned one;
He fitted 'proper' race seats, uprated the brakes and suspension but otherwise the car was standard. The agility more than made up for the defecit of horses compared to some 'hot hatches'.
With regards to the boy racers who like to assume a position akin to lying with their head on the back seat, I found stopping them and reporting them for 'failing to be in control of the vehicle' usually worked (complete with digital images on the prosecution file).

I test drove a VTR when they were new and was impressed with the brakes and general handling at the time. Later drove a mate's VTS and absolutely hated it for the bone-jarring ride and peaky power delivery.

I suspect there's a bit of French car hating by those who don't like it - although I think this is a bit of a stretch to be SOTW? Surely there's some better metal about, even at this time of year?

I call bks on this statement.

From what I remember with my Saxo, the seat backs worked on a spring type lever, as opposed to a windy up wheel mechanism. So it could only be put back a to a certain angle, which was still very upright. I would say it might have only been mine, but I've been in more than one and they were all the same.
You can get it so that its the wrong side of the catch, which gets the seat stuck laughably far back.

Hero! The 106/Saxo gets a very bad image thanks to the chavticles that have them, but I'm absolutely smitten with mine. It's 100% a keeper.

"the VTR’s spunky little 8-valve 1.6 squirts out 97bhp"

hehe

In other news, I wouldn't mind one as a hack. French tin cans are fun and flimsy. Would have to be the VTS for me though- poor man's 106 GTi.

Close to 8 seconds? What like Manchester is close to London??

I personally found zetec s more fun as it did have a revvy engine and sublime feel but they are not about for shed money yet

Crash test video

hehe

Top comments pretty funny too.
Just one reason why I would not buy one, that and a friend nearly died in a VTR after a heavy crash, open up like a tin can.

Hurray! A non abused 106/saxo. Great little cars, I'll have my un abused, fsh, well cared for 106 (although 1124cc poverty spec - No powersteering, no abs, no sunroof, wind up windows, back windows don't open at all, 3 stud wheels etc) for 6 years next week. They don't get the credit they deserve, one of the last simple lightweight superminis.

posing......

It's this slightly odd attitude to the difference between the Saxo VTS and the 106 GTi (the badge and little else) that mean you can buy a much better Saxo VTS than you can a 106 GTi for 'x' amount of money.

Actually you can buy similarly decent examples of both for sub-bag outlays now.

Odd comment I must say, although I think he means you can pick up a decent VTS for under £1300, try and get a good Gti for that amount...

Rip the interior out, you'll then need to lower it cause it will be higher than a Landrover and get it on the track! I have and its awesome fun for less than a grand! Not the perfect Ring tool but excellent on in most of our circuits in the uk. Whoever gets past you on the straight wont have a fighting chance in the corners!

Indeed- aren't the only differences bodyshape & the 106's crap leather interior..? Mechanically they're utterly identical...

I've never really understood why 106's have held there value so much better. I assume its because they were never offered with free insurance un like the saxo VTR's and Corsa's so never had the image problem that the Saxo did.

Quick tip for anyone with a leaking Saxo sunroof. If its dripping out of the courtesy light/alarm sensor bit on the roof, there is a good chance its actually the base of the ariel that is allowing the water in. You can easily undo the nut for the ariel behind the courtesy light and bosh a bit of sealant around it.

Also a really cheap mod that improved my Saxo's no end was a quick st. They're about £20 and take minutes to fit.

OT

I call foul on some of those last tests - speeds might have been higher in a few tests and they weren't all the same test

The VW Bettle and Golf tests were shockers and looked like they were to the same stds

The one that really shocked me was the Ford F150 - that's an eyeopener for sure

Back on topic - I've never seen a std Saxo before and I'm guessing this one might be the last
