I sold a 530i Sport shortly before we had our first baby. I needed to cut back on outgoings and save a bit of cash.

I ran a Focus for three years.

When our second was on the way I wrote off a 330i that I had owned for 8 months. Rather than replace it like for like I bought another Focus, again to save money.

Kids are expensive, especially when child care costs mean your wife has to stop working.

I don't want to be the bloke who's kids don't get new shoes because he has an expensive toy in the garage.

Babies are pretty cheap. School fees…if they go to private school as most education up to 18 is FREE!!
How do fees you have to pay in 18 years time have any effect on the car you have when your child is a baby?
I don't know about the usual level of earnings on PH, but I'm saving *now* for the upcoming costs should mini-me decide that further education is something he wants to do.

The chances of me magicking that sort of money out of my arse in 18 years time are slim.

I don't think babies are cheap at all.

They need a new wardrobe every 3 months for the first two years and every six months after that.

New wardrobes are quite cheap at IKEA.

Although, nothing that can't be obtained for free. The joy of kiddy clothing is that there is tonnes and tonnes of it floating around, nearly new, and for nothing. Same with any kids stuff that isn't safety related.

It is very much down to personal choice how much you spend on a baby beyond nappies and a car seat. Milk is free, clothing can be got for free, as can toys and buggies and food once they are off milk is incredibly cheap as it is basically rice and veg etc.

This is the biggie for a lot of (most?) people - household income takes a dive after maternity leave if a parent stays at home, or full-time childcare can cost £15k+ per year until they reach school age...

It can have a huge impact on disposable income.

I sold the TVR because we are planning on starting a family. There was just no way I could afford to run it and a second car (wife dosnt drive).

However I will be getting a cheaper weekend toy this year which to both of us seems a good idea, I still have something that I can tinker with and enjoy and fingers crossed the little Aston will also get the petrol bug smile

The funny thing is all of my wifes friends think we are mad as "you will never get any time to sit down let alone work on a car or go to a car show!"

Your wife's friends are correct, unless you plan ahead and ensure you make the time. Get an affordable fun car as you suggest but also ensure that you negotiate a time slot when you are free to work on it wink

The key is to be Germanic in your planning/plotting, not Italian. biggrin

hehe Even early morning drives on the weekend will need prior agreement if the little one(s) wake at 6am!

This is a question I've been musing about over the last couple of months as we're expecting our first in June (EEEP), the 9-5 aero has isofix in the back and a pretty large boot (for a saloon).

However, I have been looking at estate cars such as 9-5 aero estate, MG ZT 260 Estate etc smile
9-5 Aero will make a terrific family car. BIG boot and plenty of space for a family with 250hp to boot!

That was a plan of mine that went out the window as the noise will wake the little buggers. biggrin

I pay the boss to go out once a week with friends so that I then have one evening later in the week when I can faff about with toys.

The only real solution for me was to change the 2 seater for a 2+2 though.

It all requires a lot of planning just to ensure a few hours of 'me' time.

To be fair, it was more the maintenance costs. You won't get much change from 1k for a cambelt change for example, which was due around now.
£1k? On a 156 GTA? Someone's seen you coming a mile off, should be about £400 !

After the Tuscan it needs to be something with at least 300bhp per ton.

Wife's favorite so far is an RX7 FD3 the plus side is it's a 2+2 so both her and the little one can come along to shows/meets etc.

Does for us. Also gets a bike in the back with the wheel on.

Usefully goes whoosh on overboost.
Usefully can take a moose strike without it coming through the windscreen.
