I find it somewhat funny and a little sad that the old country still seems obsessed with old money versus new, class and taste when it comes to buying cars. Is there any 'old' money left? Even in the sixties (now fifty years ago everyone) proportionately many Bentleys and Astons were sold to celebrities. I moved out of the county set (incessant snobby suppers discussing private school issues) to live in the US and here I find that people are into cars, or they aren't. If they are, then it's either classics, or new; 'foreign' or 'muscle', with plenty that just love everything. I get much admiration for my cars (including an old Bentley and a new one) from every socio economic group from Park Ave to deep Bronx - if it's a nice car then that's enough. I can park anywhere without fear of jealous retribution and nobody ever talks old or new money.
For all of you that say you'd buy one if you had the money and if they weren't so 'new money', when you make your money will it be 'new' or 'old'?
It's quite ironic to see that you still vote a group of old etonians to ru(i)n the country.
You got me thinking about the celebrity side of things. The only footballers of the 60's & 70's that could afford the top flight motors were the truly world class players we had back then, not an 18 year old that plays for Watford. The rock stars of the day were actually good at what they did, they had talent and could play/sing with the best of them. Perhaps they'd earned the respect needed not to denigrate the brand image of the cars they drove. For all of you that say you'd buy one if you had the money and if they weren't so 'new money', when you make your money will it be 'new' or 'old'?

Well said sir, I salute your observation of our strange little island. It is the above reasons that are a primary driver to myself and Lady Petroleum relocating to Australia in the next 12 months. A quality hand built motor is a thing to admire the world over. Although cant help thinking the Bento could do with a change in direction designwise.

I'm amazed so many people on here care about image!
I'd love one of these.
I think everyone cares about image to a greater or lesser degree, even people who want to avoid having an image have an image, unavoidable. People invariably want approval from some group or other.I'd love one of these.
If cost were no object I'd love one too, it better than my car. Given the cash though I think you'd have to be quite keen to make a statement to choose this car over others.

Hmm, so you think that you can stereotype a person/people from the car that they drive.
You do know that this is Pistonheads and that you should just make opinions on the cars, not the person.
My misses drives a RR and i've had two Bentley GTs, does that mean you have something to say about me?
You look like the sort of person who enjoys their cars, would you turn down a free Bentley if someone offered it to you because of the stereotype you associate with it?

My wife has been involved with marketing the CGT since its launch, and the reality is that owners come from all walks of life.
Sure, plenty are footballers and celebrities, but they are outnumbered by successful business owners from hairdressers to scrap metal dealers, bankers to hoteliers, brewers to surgeons. You simply cant tell who will walk into a dealership next.

I think it is proportionate - a lot more wealthy people now, a lot more Bentleys and Astons are made and sold, and a lot more 'celebrities' buying them. So in relative terms I think nothing has changed, you just see more of them around. Luxury cars, since they were first built in the early 1900's have always had a following from the landed gentry to people with new found cash, in those days they were 'stars' and 'bounders' rather than 'celebrities' and 'w#%$*ers'.2manycars said:

People rightly or wrongly judge others on appearance, what car they drive, etc. all the time, to an extent it's human nature and PH is simply reflective of reality. You do know that this is Pistonheads and that you should just make opinions on the cars, not the person.

I like the fact that posters are generally honest about about this rather than pretend otherwise.

They're tuners, not manufacturers.
The Brabus E V12 Roadster in the picture was released last year, and has full TÜV certification. Egro it is a manufactured model in its own right, the same as the Continental GT (which is arguably a "tuned" A8).I don't want to belittle the very good work which Bentley is doing, I just get riled when manufacturers make false claims as one of their main selling points.

Very, very clearly, Brabus are in the business of tuning Mercedes-Benz cars.

Your Mrs will want to come back here as soon as she realises in Oz they treat women like 2nd class citizens. Culturally the place is like the UK 50 years ago, they are racist, bigoted, sexist as well as being crap at cricket!
I can jump in my car leave my house and in 12 hours can have driven through over 7 countries experiencing everything they have to offer, try doing that in Oz. Oh, and by the way dont drive over 30mph anywhere or they'll lock you up! If you need to run away don't blame it on the country! This country is without any shadow of a doubt the best country in the world, yes, it has a few problems but I can assure you England is in ok shape. You wernt in a coma last year were you?

I hate the chrome, especially around the rear lights.
It's the chrome around the rear lights I seriously dislike. It reminds me of European cars in the U.S that get factory issue shiny chrome wheels and similar chrome finishing treatment. Applied with restraint and in the right places it can work well. But on the rear lights like this, no.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
