Just checked the max towing weight and it isn't enough to hump the race car around. Weighs about 1100KG's plus trailer, Dusters max tow weight braked is 1200.. gutted as i was seriously considering one frown

The 4 x 4 is 1500 kgs so you should be fine.
I wouldn't tow a car with this thing... too light and under-powered.

Just not safe.

Skoda Yeti - max tow weight 2000 kg
Depends on the model - they vary from 1200kg (for the 2wd 1.2) up to 2000kg for the more powerful 4x4 diesels.

Sounds likely, although from the way some people on here talk you'd think the UK was just as bad. hehe

Why do you think I have a Vit, rather than something like the Infiniti I had in the states? hehe

£10k to £15 would get you into a reasonable Nissan Pathfinder but I'd imagine that the running costs would be far higher.

Like this one that is tempting me http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Skoda Yeti - max tow weight 2000 kg
Fair one but the Frontera i currently drive is 2800KGs.. Still plenty of life left in the old girl but I really liked the look of Duster. Also i really don't like the Yeti i think its ugly!

£1500 for a decent Jeep Cherokee XJ (thats the early, boxy one) - buy a late model, c'99-2000. Bullet-proof, doesn't rust (early ones do), does a wonderful job as a daily hack and station car, and VERY capable off-road....

2" lift and AT tyres and they're unstoppable.

Why spank £10k on a Renault to achieve the same thing?

Oh don't be wet. It's barely any lighter than a Defender 90 and similar power. Dacia have ruled it out with a low towing limit, fair enough, but not because it's too light and under-powered.

Tend to agree - £8995 is not cheap, let alone £10995. Why would you buy something that even Renault considers down-market when you can get something massively better for a quarter of that if you go used?

Don't get me wrong - I think it's great, and see more interest in this than the latest Golf/Audi/BM 20k hatch. BUT if you want cheap, you go second-hand. Simples.

but what if you want cheap, new, AND 4x4.

many many many people in this country are used to paying £x per month to have a car on their drive.

changing their current steed for this one will mean that monthly figure actually FALLS, and they end up better off in one fell swoop.

They could get an old car and start shedding ( like me ) but this isnt post war Britain any more.. people arnt mechanically competent.. ( as a majority ) when something breaks they don't know why.. it just doesn't work anymore.. never mind expecting them to find the leaver to pop the bonnet open.

With a new car.. they pay a premium so they don't HAVE to learn. they don't HAVE to care.. they just put fuel in and drive it.. meanwhile the dealership collects the car from their work every-so-often and brings it back... clean.

I understand why people buy new cars.

I understand why people shed.

Torques are down vs the defender 90's diesel (240Nm vs 360Nm) and weight is also down. (1294 kg vs 1750kg)... and let's be honest, power isn't exactly the defenders strong point.

I also would not use a defender 90 to regularly tow a car due to the short wheelbase. A 110 or 130 would be more appropriate.

It's not about being "wet". It's simply about the correct tool for the job.

You can't compare the Defender with the Duster. The Defender is bigger and heavier and in another class all together, I don't think it's an SUV either but maybe I'm wrong.
BTW, I bought my Duster as used from the dealership, with around 10 000 km on board, but with a full 5 years warranty. Almost as good as new. biggrin

I've got a 1998 (R reg - 1 previous owner) Toyota Hi-Lux 4x4, manual windows, cassette radio, no A/C and steelies. It's used as a 2nd car for when the awful weather hits us, log lugging, house moving, hay and straw collecting and any other dirty job I have. It's a bit battle scared but it's utterly brilliant!!

I've had it since yr 2000 it's done 67k miles and it gets given an oil change every year. I bought it for £9k and today it's probably worth £2k.

I get the Duster idea, totally. If the Toyota ever dies and I seriously doubt it ever will, I'd take the Duster in diesel, boggo trim level with a DAB radio and that's it!!

Whatever happened to the Lada Niva 4x4.....now that was a car I wanted when I was a teenager?

I am also a fan of the Dacia Duster.

Too many cars these days are like Apple iphones. They flatter to deceive with their excess shinyness and needless baubles, which often only exist to distract people from the reality of the product itself - which is usually mediocre at best.

The Dacia is an antidote to this.

It is the anti-Audi.
The problem with that comparison is that the iPhone, like Audi is actually a very good product and is arguably a struggle to beat. Sure the iPhone lacks the final level of geekery and the Audi the final level of dynamic polish but they are very very good and market leaders for a reason.

I like the Dacia and what it stands for but would I really drop £10k of my own money in to it? That would be an almighty struggle.

I think most of us are not used anymore to cars that had no luxury, were down on power and just did what they had to do.

The Niva and the HiLux are cars like that. Check out a Diahatsu Rocky: not a bad car for what it is!

So you would happily buy a Q5 / Q7 instead?

The Duster, IMO is a very utilitarian product, it has been designed to perform a function and as such has a rugged charm of which many of us on here can appreciate.

If I could afford a Q5 or Q7 would I buy a Duster? No, I'd buy a Defender instead wink
