I am also a fan of the Dacia Duster.
Too many cars these days are like Apple iphones. They flatter to deceive with their excess shinyness and needless baubles, which often only exist to distract people from the reality of the product itself - which is usually mediocre at best.
The Dacia is an antidote to this.
It is the anti-Audi.
Anti-Apple people are hilarious. Too many cars these days are like Apple iphones. They flatter to deceive with their excess shinyness and needless baubles, which often only exist to distract people from the reality of the product itself - which is usually mediocre at best.

If air-con can be retrofitted, then the basic version is by far the best VFM.
The beauty of it is that everything they spec can be fitted afterwards, by yourself, at home.
Here's the guides!

And Maybe a powered tailgate and ipod connection, thats all, thats the lot!Appealing cheap new wheels, but I'm not sure I follow the comparison with old simple french kit. I always thought the heart of their appeal lay in the pleasing dynamics that lightweight construction and soft but well damped chassis afforded. Match it up to a light, feelsome unassisted rack and that's pretty much the template right there: AX, 205, 309, R5, R4.... but the Duster? Everything I've read so far suggests it's a bit lumpen in the way it goes down the road; adequate and perfectly acceptable for the price - perhaps possessed of an old school charm - but certainly not a dynamic delight a la the aforementioned French fancies....
I like these. I know it doesn't have 4wd but I bought a three year old Berlingo diesel in the summer. No air con, cheap everything. Feels cheap. Massive inside. Elevated driving position. 46mpg. No air con. Swallows everything! Six and a half grand. Budget motoring at its best!
New vs. old I know, but I don't need 4wd enough to warrant the newer car...

Very true, but then I guess it all depends what you want to do with. Off road towing on grass might not be on road, but it's not exactly off roading. Most farm tracks can successfully be tackled by most hatchbacks, so again taking a 4x4 down such a road isn't really indicative of it being "very good off road".
As for diff lockers, well most almost all Land Rover's don't have them (unless you mean the CDL).
But driving across a ploughed field might well mean driving across a ditch too or some other proper off road obstacle. Many hill farmers will also use far more of a vehicles off road ability too. If the Dacia can do this, then great but I'm yet to actually see any detail or proof of it, only these un-substantiated claims that it's good off road.
I would have thought, that in the world of rational thinking that the average Joe would not think 'ooh, that 11k 4x4 will trounce a Sahara spec G Wagen' or make a Defender wince at how far ahead this car has got. I would have thought that most people, taking a relative view would think towards comparable cars at the lower end of the market and set their expectations accordingly. As for diff lockers, well most almost all Land Rover's don't have them (unless you mean the CDL).

I seriously wonder if at times you apply a nitpick pedance purely for the hell of it.

There was a dacia duster sold in the 1970"s-80"s that was cheap and sold over europe,i liked that model even though i was only about 12 years old.Like the new one and when it gets 3 years old will be ideal for me for winter, instead of buying a knackered 15 year old discovery every year,or like this year a diesel freelander(bmw 2.0 engine),which is now for sale Mod edit - all the rest of the ad removed.
