That's exactly my point. I don't want to think about it, I just want a nice product that does what I want.

Anyone who researches the product or the price properly won't buy one.
I can confirm with absolute certainty that if there was/is a phone that did twice what the Iphone can do, twice as fast, I would still get an Iphone.

Derailing the thread a little now though.

Be very careful. They're almost old enough to breed and next thing you know you'll have them everywhere....

Have you ever driven a Dacia or Land Rover yet?

As always, you´ll get what you are paying for.

Both, quite a lot. On road and off road.

The Duster isn't far off a Disco Sport. The interior doesn't feel as expensive as the DS but it does the same job, for half the price.

Only for a very narrow definition of 'job'. Yes I'm sure it's very competent off-road and will get you from A-B just fine...but that is far from the only 'job' that people buy cars for.

The Duster doesn't do the job of wafting you along in silent luxury. It doesn't do the job of pushing the technological boundaries of 4x4s. It doesn't do the job of keeping up with the Jones's or giving you golf-club car park kudos. People buy Discos for all these reasons and many others.

I'm sure the Duster, and all Dacias, are excellent vehicles in their own right - when seen in context. But, for many people, they only do half the 'job'. And sometimes not even that.

I don't think this is really the point of the Duster though. It's not there to push the technological boundries of 4x4s - any of the 'serious' off-road gubbins would increase the price, weight and complexity of the car, pushing it further and further from its basic utilitarian roots. ‘Job’ doesn’t really come into it when all you really want is a basic, functional, no-nonsense vehicle that will perform school-run, pet, tip duties etc and that won’t embarrass itself if you ask it to drive across a wet field or unmade road.

I spent a week driving one around Iceland late last year. They’re really not my kind of car but it definitely got under my skin. Ours was one of the higher-spec diesel models with selectable AWD, heated seats (welcome in Iceland!), air-con (not so necessary), CD player, cruise control etc. On studded tyres it was remarkably capable on the Icelandic unmade roads, particularly when we got lost on this one…

This was taken on a flat bit, but by this point we’d tackled some pretty steep climbs on fresh snow and forded three semi-frozen rivers. I honestly don’t think it needs to be able to do more than that, but it never felt like it was struggling and I’m sureit could perform reasonably well off-road in more capable hands than mine.

It’s not perfect – the six-speed gearbox is a pointless accessory, I’d have much preferred a 5-speed with a longer 1st gear, and the fuel tank is on the small side – but after a week and 2000km I was genuinely gutted to give it back. I’m waiting patiently for them to fall into shed territory so I can buy one which I have absolutely no need for hehe

Talking of shed territory. I too have been waiting and they have been out 3 years now but I'm not seeing any for sale at half their original price.

I'd imagine this is a car you buy new and keep forever.

A short first gear is handy off road and helps get round the need for a low range box.

I too am waiting for prices to drop but they're bought by the cost-conscious who aren't bothered if their car hits 3 years old. frown

I would buy one if they had a decent tow capacity, not looking to pull a building down but on an 1800kg plated trailer, I cant drag it behind one frown

Of course a Duster doesn't half the job as a DS - but then: THIS IS PH and not the real world.

Most folks 'out there' don't have a clue and choose an 'A to B' vehicle and are happy with it.

... and say: it's like a Landy but then way cheaper.

It's like saying an MX-5 is like an Exige. Or a Focus RS is like a Aventador. Duh!

Disco Sport is IMO one of the most grossly overpriced road cars on this planet - yet customers are snapping them up just as enthusiastically as the very overpriced Evoque. Again, it's all in the marketing.

Duster is great value basic motoring IMO. I also have a bit of a soft spot for Kia Sportage, another car which doesn't tick the boxes for our fashionistas!

My Ex actually bought a brand new Duster a couple of years ago and it's been a very good car.

She paid £15k for it, came with all the usual things you'd expect in a modern car. Electric windows/mirrors, MP3 stereo, a/c etc Not the bare bones one you get for £10k.

It also included the pretty decent 1.5dci engine so is cheap to run and insure, plus it has a full 4wd (I believe from an Xtrail) rather than FWD.

For the money, it'll never offer the same refined finish you get in the more luxury brands. Just because it's a 4x4 it's not a Ranger Rover! Same as a Golf-R is a fast car but it's not a 911!

They are though, a bargain brand new, they drive fairly well and as a family car it offers a lot for the money.
