RE: Time For Tea? GT3 and Turbo test at the 'ring
Discussion
On the subject of the 991, I was watching this EVO review on the new Carrera 4 today and it seemed very positive. I always thought the all wheel drive 911s were considered to be the least desirable of the range.

I'm sure auto box makes the car slightly faster and easier to drive (other than on snow). Personally though, so what. If human beings always preferred the faster, easier, safer option, we'd all take the cable car back down the mountains, instead of wasting time and risking our necks with those outdated ski contraptions : )
The 911 will sell more than ever, as it has "broadened its appeal", as they say. God bless Noble say I. All there's left for romantics.

Really committed driving
Not yet convinced about the GT3. Both in looks and (likely) engine it moves away from being the base car for the Cups to just another easily accessible top end 911. Broadening the appeal might well make a lot of commercial sense as not many GT3s were sold in the past and the price premium over cooking 911s was very low considering what you got.
When the first hints about the 997 GT3 came out at the time I could not wait to get my hands on it. The 991 GT3 leaves me pretty cold. Frightening...

turbo and gt3 look very similar to the 997 varients! I would suggest in particular that the gen 11 997 gt3 values will therefore remain pretty strong! can barely tell them apart from a 991.

Lets just hope that PDK in the GT3 is an option and that a manual is still available (not that I can afford one )
I love the fact that the ONE marque that is guaranteed to have the beards out in force is Porsche. It's got the wrong gearbox, it's not using an engine which can trace it's root's back the original Beetle blah blah blah. I think it's hilarious.
Don't get me wrong, I love the older Porsche's but it's this kind of thinking that has meant the 911 is stuck with an engine in the rear and styling that hasn't changed for 50 years. It's time to let it go people, Porsche need to move with the times and keep up with their competitors. I appreciate each generation of 911 for the new things it brings to the party (yes even the 996) and this will be no different.
Oh and don't worry, if you don't like the new one, there are still plenty of over-priced older Porsches for all you beardy types to buy\fawn over too.

Every time a new GT3 comes out people moan that it wont be as good as the previous one, but each time Porsche improve on it. Look at the leap from the 996 GT3 mk1 to the last 997 GT3 RS. Its chasmic!!
I only hope porsche start putting more effort into losing pounds, at 1400 KG, the GT3 has got a bit porky, when you remember that the 964 RS was only about 1160KG. Its not like they need to give the car much more power, so I'd like to see some proper efforts at shedding weight please. THe Noble M600 is only 1200KG so it can be done, even on a modern car!!

Ferdinand Porsche would be turning in his grave if he knew about PDK on a GT3.
Porsche really fked up this time.
The GT3 didn't even exist when Ferdinand was around...what? Ferdinand wouldn't have cared what transmission it had as long as it functioned well.Porsche really fked up this time.
And I bet it does. No one screams bloody-murder at a Ferrari 458 or 430 Scuderia having a double-clutch box...
But otherwise I totally agree with you.
MikeGoodwin is talking rubbish!
PDK box puts a GT3 on my radar. I HATE clutches.

Really? almost every reveiw of those to cars had the line, 'shame there will never be manual version' in them somewhere.
I haven't. Driven both. Both boxes are fabulous.
When I bought my F430 I wanted a manual as love the look of the gate and thought a manual would be more involving. SO SO SO SO glad I was talked out of it by mates... F1 box is superb on road and track. Fun when you want on road on road and track. Relaxing in traffic and when you just wanna pottle.

They are disguised to look like the older cars thats why. The 991 is much bigger when you see one in the metal.
I do think it's obvious that Porsche must continue pushing the development of the car and that means new engine (so possibly no race lineage), PDK, etc, etc. They are also a for profit company so... no rose tinted glasses. What I don't see much sense in is the GT3 losing its hardcore philosophy, in that case what sense does it make in a range with the Turbo or a kitted out 4S?
I drove most of the recent 997 and 991 Carrera variants and - fantastically well rounded and well engineered GT's they are - they always leave me cold (and not just a bit). When I jump back into my Cayman it immediately feels more alive and communicative (flame me at will).
That´s why the GT3 is the only car I truly aspire to own from the modern Porsche range. I expect it to be razor sharp, with fantastic engine noise, zero-slack steering, organic, full of feel. And yes, with a bit of usability thrown in, otherwise I would buy an Ariel or Caterham. No manual would be a shame but if it's the only thing that is sacrified than the GT3 moniker would still resonate.
The petrol-head in me wishes Porsche has some aces up it's sleeves...
