Insurance group 43! FFS
Perhaps insurance groups need some multiplier, a bit like adjusting values in line with mileage, as any damage to the aluminium bodyshell of a £1K A8 isn't going to get repaired is it?Is there much difference between comp and TPFT & plain third party to offset it being group 43?

Top shed, dad's still got his, had it 10 yrs no major problems. I had a sport, great car, superb interior, for the size economical too, seem to remember about 32mpg, not one problem too, just watch ronin for further inspiration ! And then resist searching the classifieds for an e34 m5

I didn't realise that they did FWD A8's, thought they were all quattro! Still, a lot of car for the money
There are no FWD A8's they are RWD or Quattro On another note, this appeals to me. Just for its slight quirkiness, I would love a 3.7 FWD.
Girlfriend's dad had the 2nd gen A8 L 3.0 TDI quattro. Engine blew up a thousand miles past the warranty expiration. Experiencing it as a passenger I have to say that I wish I could afford him to take me to work every day.
Small petrol first gen car presumably a totally different story so I suppose this was totally O/T.

I've got a 98 A4 B5 saloon with the 2.4 v6 30v i bought it as a safe family run about 8 years ago, it's a bit different now it's running a PES G2 supercharger kit, Eibach Anti roll bar up front, a Neuspeed adjustable one on the rear, Weitec suspension (Made by KW)Porsche calipers with S4 Grooved disks i've also had an LPG kit fitted which means that i could decat it as it flies through the MOT when running on gas and i've got an extra 10-15 bhp to boot, it's a really satisfying car to drive i retired it from daily duties about 5 years ago i only use it at the weekends it's done just under 120k and it drives beautifully it's a bit of a sleeper ! my neighbors got an S8 they sound sweet but mine growls and the supercharger whine is completely addictive.

Sold my 2002 S8 2 yrs ago for 5 bags with full spec and 95000 on the clock in mint condition and I mean mint. Gearbox oil replaced etc etc. Averaged 17 mpg and no more than 20mpg on a run. Truly savage consumption. Terrified of the gearbox going. Every time I started it, I was praying nothing would break.
During 2 years, I had front wish bones, two cats, replaced plus other consumables like discs etc. so not cheap to run but one cool car for sure. If i had the opportunity again, i would go for the longer geared 4.2 v8 for better economy.
Also, I could never get the perfect seat position no matter how I tried despite the multi adjustments.
Furthermore, the exhaust is too muted for a V8.
Lovely red light ambient interior at night though.
Finally, it would take a braver man than me to break the otherwise limpet like grip.
Great car!
Pretty much mirrors my experience currently in my S8 on fuel economy. In 2 years its needed the range select switch mentioned previously replacing (£150) - the not coming out of Park thing was covered on a recall shortly after I bought it - and a front ABS sensor. Nothing has dropped off, been an MOT failure or otherwise been a problem.During 2 years, I had front wish bones, two cats, replaced plus other consumables like discs etc. so not cheap to run but one cool car for sure. Milltek sorts the V8 volume nicely
I've had my gearbox serviced too, but mine's only done about 50k from new. Audi have a stupid 'sealed for life' policy on their ZF boxes which you'd be mad to accept as sensible. An oil and filter change costs buttons compared to a rebuild on the box.

I know that shed! Always see it around Swansea and (working at Audi) in Swansea Audi. It's a very well kept car.
Possible the most important post on this whole thread. I can remember the mags road testing the 2.8 at the time of launch and saying that the lack of Quattro drivetrain and the aluminium body made it quite acceptable in the performance stakes. Obviously it won't be 'fast', but if you want to waft it will be fine.

If we had the V5C ref, or last MoT certificate number we could check the MoT history on the DVLA website which would give us the test results and may confirm whether it's this one that frequents Audi Swansea.

Great car. As a few have said, the earlier A8 2.8s would have had the same 174 BHP as my Dad's J-reg 100 2.8E did, then it was the next generation A6 (arrived UK May 1997) and later A8s that would have had the 193 BHP. A few years later the VW Golf 4Motion inherited the engine but the BHP was increased to 204 BHP.
The Golf 4 motion had a 2.8 VR6 24v engine. Completely different!I've got a 98 Passat with this engine minus the cats. Still quiet and fairly quick. Even with front wheel drive 235 tyres get the power down nicely.
I'm sure the A8 is heavier but 30mpg on a run and 20mpg around town is bearable. As mentioned an MOT would be a must but what a great car for the cash

Not as bad as you think, I have a '95 4.2v8 A8 and my insurance was £350 this year, 32 y/o male, full NCD and 1 speeding conviction. I think mine is group 44. Great cars, everything except the heated seats work on mine. It's like driving a sofa on the motorway eating up miles easily. Can just about squeeze 500 miles out of a tank if you drive carefully. Though it's a big tank and quite painful to fill from empty (and you're supposed to use RON97 or higher)
