Come on who was it?

Doesn't seem that much of a bargain for a scabby 16 year old Boxter auto to me, plenty on Auto Trader younger and fitter for only a few hundred quid more.
Or as I like to say, the sort of coin I find down the back of the sofa...
I agree, people are so wrapped up with Porsche and the badge. I look at this motor and think yeah so what? It's a nyon 20 year old converible which will no doubt need a shed load throwing at it when for similar money you can get much better performance cars. I have absolutely no urge to go and buy a Beige Boxster.Or as I like to say, the sort of coin I find down the back of the sofa...

Have these really been around 16 years! Quite scary. 1997 was a long time ago though and I don't think the 2.5 set the world alight then. There would be a lot of scope for fast Ford/Vauxhall embarssment these days.
Never driven a Boxster then? I'd struggle to find a hot hatch that would amuse me as much as any Boxster regardless of any straight line speed advantage.

Nope, never. I used to have a little Citroen Saxo with a Rotrex supercharger though that pushed a Boxster S along easily to some mph. I'm pretty sure my car provided more amusement that day than a Boxster could . Like it or not some badges carry an expectation for performance, and in the real world most of that is measured in straight lines. 200bhp with a Porsche badge on it doesn't cut it imo. I'd struggle to find a hot hatch that would amuse me as much as any Boxster regardless of any straight line speed advantage.

Then you have missed out, imo truly brilliant cars to drive. Mine "only" had 252bhp, but never before and never since have i enjoyed driving a car so much. Sure there are a lot of modern saloons that would outdrag it in a race in a straight line, but thats not the point of the car, throw some challenging road in and a boxster and you will have a grin like a cheshire cat.northandy said:

You were missing the point then, just because the Saxo was as quick doesn't make it a better steer. Everything about a good 986 or 987 Boxster feels right when you point it down a road in a way that IME even hot hatches with 50-100bhp more don't quite cut it. I'm a huge fan of small cars that can punch above their weight but BHP is not the key ingredient in making a car great, if it were Catherham wouldn't exist. NISaxoVTR said:

A Boxster was more expensive by three or four time than a Saxo for a reason, it was designed by the outset as a mid engined sports car, a Saxo was designed as a shopping hatch, I don't mind Saxos but they don't give the same drive as a Porsche, even if faster by some margin, it is,and will always be a hollow "victory'.
