Some people really don't like being overtaken do they?
Discussion
Is this unique to the UK? I see theses threads periodically and it seems incredible. I travel a lot and drive in multiple countries is a year (not the UK as it happens),but I would say I have never been deliberately blocked. (Evidently there are times when people are not paying attenrion but they do eventually look in the mirrors.
Yet, the UK seems to have changed. When I lived there many years ago I naver came across the fist waving/flashing/strict enforcement zealots that appear to be a purely UK species.
Even the anti-speeding posts here show a lot of anger at times for what it not dangerous but merely a bit of spirited lawbreaking. (I am NOT condoning blasting through villages of that 113MPH Porsche driver running past the bikes)
Has the UK turned turned into a community of purse-lipped disapprovers.
Unless you are on a set of endless hairpins I don't buy the theory that you can have marvellous fun at 40 or 50 MPH.
Of course, there are laws and penalties and I have no worries about their enforcement. But they do seems to have engendered a fun-killing puritan movements of Cromwellian motorists.
Sad.really. The UK used to be a blast to drive int. Way,way back I recall taking an Aston Martin DBS down the motorway flat out, somwthing that was generally not regarded as akin to scild molesting. Of course I also recall those magnificent, crowded, smoke filled bars too;_
Welcom to the healthy, responsible non-smoking,salad eating, diesel driving modern world.
Slow down,won't you?
By the way. I don't smoke apart from the occasional cigar and have a clear license everwhere, but it all seems to have gone paer-shaped compared to the free old days.

Maybe. I've not driven abroad a lot. I would say it isn't endemic though, I've overtaken a lot over here and never had a bad reaction. I suspect there is some selective memory from the people who get reactions regularly.rumple said:
Really? What happened that sounds intresting, what forum? Change names etc but tell us, sounds much more intresting than some dick trying to block you.
Oh some chap turned up on some other chaps doorstep. I can't remember whether he got smacked in the mouth or whether it was all shouty sweary and nothing happened.Either way I don't want some lunatic turning up on my doorstep!
I would say it's quite a common thing to happen on the roads unfortunately.
Road rage happens more often than reported. If someone is behaving aggressively on the road and there's a threat the cars will collide, there's no shame in "doing the off" and getting away from them. At the same time everyone behaves differently when provoked, so stopping and damaging their car with hands, feets and objects is justified for some!

I wish I understood why people don't want overtaking.
If you are happy doing 40, why be unhappy if someone else gets to do 60 if they want to?
It's about controlling other people's behaviour I guess; it's not something I've ever felt the need to do.
Either that or it's good old fashioned competitiveness, but if it is, then you can't "win" by driving slower than the car behind wants to.
Or the good old fashioned British queue mentality. Do these people expect faster pedestrians to walk behind them and not try to get by.
As you can see, I just don't get it.

It also has something to do with the car that you drive too.
I never had any problems overtaking other cars or pulling out of junctions while driving the Abarth. However the second I got the BMW I get brake tests, abuse and down right dangerous driving towards me.
My driving style has not changed, the only difference is that I no longer drive a loud Red Abarth and drive a big Blue BMW instead.

It is very odd behavior, but I'm guessing the majority have some kind of ego problem and they feel belittled when someone overtakes them.If you are happy doing 40, why be unhappy if someone else gets to do 60 if they want to?
Some people just don't want to adjust to their surroundings/conditions.
If I'm going somewhere and I'm taking my time I'll quite happily sit at 40 in a 60 if there's no cars behind me. However, if there's a car behind me and there isn't space for them to overtake I'll speed up if safe to do so as I know how annoying it can be sitting behind a slow moving vehicle.

I think a lot of the problem is the state of congestion in this country. Another car in front is another car to have to wait behind at the next island, set of lights, tailback etc. So for some people, dawdling along at 40mpg in an NSL, they have a stretch of clear road in front of them. Someone comes past and overtakes and immediately the few miles of serenity they thought they had are gone. Then they become enraged.
Personally it doesn't bother me in the slightest if someone wants to overtake, what really gets on my chimes is when they sit a few inches from my back bumper (on a SLC) expecting me to speed up. 90% of the time (apart from the unsociable commuting hours) I've got the kids in the car so I tend to drive to the conditions and marginally over the limits (they are advisory aren't they?).
Ironically one of my mates who is indeed a very nice chap and not exactly a hardened streetfighter can become a total ahole behind the wheel of his rather underpowered Omega.
The reason it doesn't bother me is that I know i'm a Sex God with the charm and charisma of David Niven, Sean Connery and George Clooney combined.....

I'm inclined to agree.Certainly on roads in Shropshire, I take any opportunity to safely pass a 40mph dawdler on NSL roads and - honestly - I've never experienced any mental from the overtakee.
In fact, I can only remember one instance in 16 years of driving where another driver has taken umbrage against one of my overtakes (A4059 back in 1990 I think: overtakee speeded up mid-pass).
Today, whilst be chauffeured by SWMBO, we caught up with a BMW 330D Touring. It was doing ~55mph, we were doing ~60mph on single carriageway NSL road. As we caught up it sped off into the distance and then slowed back down to its original speed so, inexorably, we caught it up again. We then encountered a roundabout and as we exited onto the dual carriageway after the roundabout the Foucs RS behind pulled out and gunned it past us and as it approached the Bimmer the Bimmer driver put pedal to the metal to try and prevent the overtake! Needless to say the Bimmer stood no chance and was roundly embarrassed particularly at the next roundabout where his obvious lack of talent was clearly demonstrated.
