Or you could get a prius
Petrol so none of the modern diesel crap and good on fuel.
Terrible idea for long motorway journeys. Priusesses are designed for round town use. They're no better than 45ish Mpg on the motorway. And A £5k one will be shot.Petrol so none of the modern diesel crap and good on fuel.
And what will of failed in a £5K prius
And before you say the battery could you please find me a company that refurbs the battery pack as if they all fail then logic dictates someone must make money by repairing them.

Yes, black engine cover = 163bhp non-DPF, non swirl arm jobby (independent of whether its a pre/post facelift).
The 163 non-DPF is considered to be the better of the D5 variants, mainly because its not lumbered with the complicated (and expensive) Euro4 emissions compliance gubbins. The only negative point of the e3 over the e4 that I can readily think of is that the intercooler is weaker and prone to failure - although its only a £2-300 repair when it goes pop.

Volvos sound good
Just a query though for those of you who are familiar with the volvos - what is the ride quality like on bad roads. I know the Volvos will be deliver sublime motorway comfort - but theres not one of those for the best part of 50 miles from me.
Plenty of coutry roads with potholes etc mind you
Back on topic - how bad would a Mondeo be - not a bad place to sit in if you have a high spec Ghia X imo, they are comfy with plenty of space.
The diesels do have injector and dual mass flywheel issues - but the way around that imo is to simply find one thats had all that done already.

I went form a 2002 Volvo V70 D5 Auto to a 2008 BMW E61 525d M Sport Manual.
The Volvo puts the BMW to shame in terms of ride quality, throw the BMW round some twisty bits though and it destroys the Volvo, horses for courses.
The S80 linked to above is theeee perfect tool for motorway bashing, it's got the black top engine too. It's almost perfect bar the JRG colour scheme. Seats are proper comfy, standard stereo is fantastically good (better than my BMW). As long as the gearbox is sound and it stops/starts form cold/hot OK then you can't go far wrong really.
Only negative is that parts can be pricey for them and they aren't without there issues, like any car though.
Find the 850/V70s of old very tautly sprung, nowhere near German-level but stiff when compared to a Saab, for example. Upside is I could chuck our V70 around far more than I could my 9-5 but was more afraid of the dreaded potholes than in the Saab. The S80 was a different kettle of fish to that, very compliant even on gravel and rutted surfaces. Assume newer V70s would be truer to how the S80 rides than what came before.

Fantastic to hear - liking the look of the Volvos - but was in an 850 taxi after a night on the tiles - and the ride was very disappointing. Turned me off the idea of a volvo. Thanks

Another vote for the Volvo here. I miss mine, even though it was getting tired, and caused me a bit of grief due to being abused in a previous life.
They can be hustled pretty well too.
With regards the Ford Mondeo, the 2.2 is pretty poor on fuel, you may as well get the petrol version. A mate has a new (ish, 10 plate I think) 2.2, that's doing 38 mpg at best. That's not good enough for a 4 cylinder diesel, especially when the Volvo D5 is better, and sounds so much nicer when you nail it.
ETA: Wrong smiley, like an idiot.

How reliable are the 330d's? I've currently got a 318 and its everything but reliable!!
Cheers for the ideas guys!
I've had my e46 330d for 6 years and it's fantastic. Very reliable and excellent on motorway, always looking at others but couldn't ever get rid, especially whilst doing lots of motorway miles. Not much else that would do the job as well in such comfort and refinement.Cheers for the ideas guys!

Hey SloMo - did you get my email about two weeks before Xmas, or did it end up in your spam folder again?
I didn't get it (I'd have responded). Did you bypass the PH system and use my main email address? You can try again, or send me a text, I think my mobile number would have been on one of those emails. What are you after?

Sent direct from my email - it was with the part numbers for the callipers. Its not important for the moment as I am in the poor house (wedding spending) and have promised to literally not buy anything I dont need for the foreseeable future!
I've no idea why it's not getting through.I still have those. Try via the PH PM system, alternatively I have a Yahoo email, I'll send it to you now.
I"m happy to keep them on one side, most of my car is now on shelves or hidden at the Office now anyway.
