Do you have any other requirements such as off road ability, space, pace spec, how it drives, looks etc?

Not sure how many a split tail gates these days. Also how big are the dogs and for what sort of use?

In reality I don't think you have any shortage of choice, pretty much every car maker currently builds a soft roader/comapct SUV and several build more than one. So the choice is for want of another word MASSIVE. There's also a healthy selection of good used premium vehicles at this price point if such a vehicle appeals.

Personally if I didn't need off road ability I'd maybe look at something like a Subaru Legacy/Outback or even a Forrester. A petrol one of these probably wouldn't be any worse pence per mile than a larger diesel 4x4 would be.

Or if I was wanting something more fun and funky I'd probably look at something like the current Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Immensely practical and capable, but the sort of vehicle that'll always be able to make you smile. Removable roof and doors and the rugged look and feel offer heaps of charm most vehicles can't even dream of.

If I was in a luxury mood then a Land Rover Disco or used Range Rover Sport would make a good bet. Maybe not so great on fuel as a smaller soft roader but unless you are doing big mileage it probably wouldn't matter.

For more of a middle of the road offering the Toyota Rav4 is consistently good and the Freelander 2 is a superb bit of kit.

Failing that if you will see the vehicle as a utility tool, then there are offerings from Vauxhall, Renault, Mazda, Ford, Kia, Hyundia, Skoda and many others. I'd probably pick the best finance deal/local dealer support/network.

As a left field option you might want to take a look at the new Dacia Duster. It's an intriguing vehicle at budget basement prices. But there has to be some logic to say why spend £25-30k if you can get 98% the same for half the price.

it's for my boss, he currently has a Mitsi Outback.

it will be used off road, the dogs are retrievers.

it will be a company car and he will spend as much as he needs to....

space no smaller than what he has, needs all the usual toys, decent stereo , cruise, aircon, nav etc. it needs to cruise nicely don't think mpg is that much of an issue..

Then that opens it up even further, tbh there's probably a hundred different makes/models that fit the criteria. I think narrowing down what they like/want would help a lot.

Personally I can recommend what I like and unless I had to have a soft roader I'd probably go for a proper capable 4x4. Toyota FJ Cruiser, Hummer H3 and Disco's all appeal. As does the afore mentioned Wrangler.

Grand Cherokee's are pretty cool too and I'm not adverse to a Cayenne or Touareg.

G-Wagen's are immensely cool too and there are a raft of interesting Yank trucks that could be quite capable for what you are describing. Be it a new Quad cab Ram with a Truckman top or something like Ford Raptor.

I'm sure things like a CR-V or X-Trail are fine vehicles in their own rights. But they are rather "white goods" in the same sort of sense as when you buy a dish washer or fridge freezer. A tool for a job and not something you really have any real interest or passion in.

i've already mentioned Discovery 4 (too big), think the sport will be too much..

I'll keep feeding back to him, looks like he is liking the audis - Allroad or Q5.. personally i'd have a proper 4x4 if it was me... (currently have a D2 and D3)
