any particular reason? I have an a6 3.0tdi manual and mostly I am pleased I did, the handbrake occasionally annoys. I also read somewhere here the auto boxes can have issues at higher mileages.
The narrow power band meant I was constantly changing gear. You'll know that it goes like a stuck rat from, what, 1500-3500 rpm, then goes all asthmatic and wheezy. A number of times I rolled up to a traffic island in 3rd gear, put my foot down to take advantage of a gap and nothing happened. Cue embarrassment.
But driving along at 70 mph + 10% on a motorway getting 38 mpg was brilliant.
I had a DB7 and a Ferrari 550 at the time which at 70mph + 10% did about 12-14mpg.
I thought spending hours in the classifieds was part of the rules of being a ph'er?
Chris - didn't you already own a 512 some time back? Or did I just imagine that..
Agree the v6 S4 is a very tempting proposition - stealthy looks, quick, practical, 4wd etc. Shame it loses the burble of the earlier 4.2 but you do gain a significant mpg improvement!

Chris, an 'integrale' Evo 2 would be a great car but I can't believe the prices now. I paid £5500 for an Evo 1 in 2004!!!
There are loads of mega cars you could buy for the value of a 599.
For £100k on toys I reckon these would be top of the tree:
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use... - This after the wheels have been painted back to silver - £50,000
http://www.autoscout24.eu/Details.aspx?id=20025638... - This ??? £7,000
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use... This ??? - £15,000
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use... - This ??? £11,500
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use... - This ??? £20,000
Hope this helps - I cant afford one of them at the minute !!!

512 TR would be my choice from your options.
Or if an old AMG is on the cards, what about this: http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

I just made a noise you might expect a cat to make upon coming home to find a new scratching post and an endless supply of fresh trout. http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

I want a Mahari also! They just appeal for some reason. Though as a sunny day, mess around sort of thing.
When I see Maharis in the South of France i can`t help thinking how much cooler they are than "try hard" supercars creeping around cobbled streets!I REALLY fancy a Renault 4 too!
I, and I'm sure many other on here also, would LOVE to see regular reports of living with a 959 in the 21st century.
How it compares with its modern 'children', how 'visible' it is to non car obsessives like us, how fast it will go through the Fatherland etc etc.
As someone else said: If you can, you surely must.
(ETA - No pressure of course... but it is your DUTY )

Some people like to bh about Harry Metcalfe and his collection etc, well how else will we get to hear about ownership of the truly amazing cars?
Stop owners in the street and ask irritating questions?
I say buy the most ridiculous car(good or bad) and tell us all about it!

Serious want.
Fantastic choices, and really does highlight what a great time it is to buy a used sports (well, sporty!) car of any kind. I don't think there's ever been a broader, cheaper selection of interesting metal for affordable money. Sadly most of my "Wow, look how cheap that's gotten!" moments are quickly snuffed out by the realities of insurance (even if that silly EU gender discrimination did knock a little off my recent renewal, thank goodness). Classic insurance is all well and good for a second car, but some of us still need an NCB. Otherwise I'd drop the MX5 in a heartbeat for a red 944 with pepperpot alloys and a very un-classy exhaust... sigh.
How about this Chris

Think this is the link!
It has a Quattro engine and an Intergrale transmission. What could possibly go wrong?
