RE: Mucking about in the snow
Discussion
Despite having the last 2 days off thanks to cretins scared of half an inch of snow (self employed so no work = no pay), I haven't been out in the car at all.
Daily is a Saab 9000 on winters so competent but fairly boring and predictable. Fun cars - TVR S2 and Saab 900, not subjecting either to other motorists or my possible mistakes. I would love to take the TVR out but not got the guts. I know I would get stuck at some point or spin it into a kerb or something.
Anyway, where's the fun driving around the suburbs on clear roads?

Ah, Heriot-Watt.
That brings back memories of doing exactly the same in the very same car park, but in a Fiat Uno twenty years ago...
I those days, though, you ran the gauntlet of a security guard who sat in a little hut on the road just the other side of that hedge.

There's also the short rally stage around the hedge rows in the car park opposite. Someone had already beaten me to both when I went at 12.
Awesome! I bet that RRS was a right laugh. Although we've had little snow here in Essex this time around, I managed to conduct some slightly unscientific 'how far can I get up that steep snowy hill?' testing last February. The cars I had to try it were:
To be fair, the Evoque is somewhat better equipped than its competitors for off-roading (with Terrain Response etc.), but I was still genuinely surprised just how impressive it was on tyres that were really not suited to the snow. The winter tyres on the FWD cars still made a fine attempt at it though (this was a steep hill!) and put them way ahead of a car on summer tyres. I've yet to try a 4x4 on winter tyres, but I can't imagine you'd ever get stuck anywhere. Ever.
- Renault Clio III with brand new Goodyear UltraGrip 8 winter tyres
- Ford Ka Mk1 with brand new Firestone Winterhawk winter tyres
- Range Rover Evoque with brand new Continental ContiCrossContact UHP summer SUV tyres

Don't say that, you do get stuck, just in a place that's very very hard to get to! I've been there! - Renault Clio III with brand new Goodyear UltraGrip 8 winter tyres

It is impressive. I've had a Disco 4 on All Terrain All Season tyres, and an Evoque on Summer tyres previously but my RRS on proper Winter tyres is fantastic. Both the D4 and RRE are great in the snow themselves but I had to turn the 'snow mode' terrain response off on the RRS to get a hint of a slip at 30 mph down a steep hill turning through 90 degrees! Stuck in the house today preparing for an OFSTED at College tomorrow. However, some past hooning...
We found this guy overhooned on new years eve 1994/95, the truck was full of squadies heading home on R&R
At the top of the Umbrail/Stelvio Pass in 1999, we still have the car, wife used it today to keep salt off the Boxster.
The view from the steering wheel on the way up. Thanks go to the Italian bikers who showed us the umbrail when we found the Stelvio snowed in. We made it up and enjoyed the smoking brakes on the way down.
Especially when we found this guy testing his brakes to. He drove straight at me when he saw the camera. We thought it might have been the McMerc but when we had the film developed realised it was the then new SL.
I thought Jock's could handle the snow? Thiswas with winter spikey tracks fitted. He nearly took us out.
Happy hooning guys.

I wondered if someone would notice that...
I was previously parked to the left of the photo and moved to take some more photos. My tracks from arriving had already been covered up!
