Similar thing with the VW Touareg. Engine, drive train and all suspension down to change a water pump. Mega bill for a service item.

Sorry, I missed the TDV8 part.

My point is that many people deemed it impossible with the 2.7 engine too but it can be done and saved my brother a fortune. No idea if it's possible with the TDV8.

It probably is easier to remove the body if you have the right equipment as Land Rover made it that way. It sounds a lot harder than it actually is.

they have a huge separate chassis - indeed most major mechanical work requires the body to be lifted off and it is designed for that - everything thing just unclipped and the body can be lifted off by a 2 or four post jack in about 2 hours.

It saved him some £1800 which I don't think is too bad for 12 hours work.

Keep the body off and just strap a pair of bucket seats and a roll hoop onto the chassis. Purely for reducing future bills of course!

How to remove a body from a manual Disco3.

Seems loads but it's straight forward to do for a LR indy.

The engine bay's are rather full when you look in them, you can remove the turbo insitu, but it's hard to do and this way is easier in the long run.

yikes

And the chances of it ever running again with no rattles?

My dad is a mechanics. Has always maintained that no one thinks of the mechanic when they design the cars.

I heard also that the cam chain on an RS6 is an engine out job, too. Madness.

The timing chain/belt on a TDV6 Disco is officially also an body-off job because it is usefully at the back of the block not at the front.

Though some specialists have devised a workaround that means its just about possible to do it in situ.

Bonkers design!

I don't see what's so crazy about this?

It's not particularly time consuming and allows superb access to many components.

It sounds much more bonkers than it is to most, because we're just not used to it with modern (monocoque) vehicles. Coming from a TVR background, it sounds pretty fine to me.
