And the chances of it ever running again with no rattles?

My dad is a mechanics. Has always maintained that no one thinks of the mechanic when they design the cars.

I heard also that the cam chain on an RS6 is an engine out job, too. Madness.
Engine out on a fiat coupe to change the camebelt too, if memory serves me correctly.

I don't think they did much to the interior, so if it does rattle the owner won't hear it.

Renaults.

Quite a lot of modern large engined cars require the engine to be taken out for various tasks.

Only on the 5 cylinder ones, but even on those I think specialists figured out a way to do it without removing the engine well over a decade ago. I think dealers that removed the engine for the cambelt may have also taken the opportunity to replace the clutch while they were at it.

False. I did the cam chain myself on an RS6, and it was just a head off job smile

What's a rough idea of cost to take the body off etc?

In about 10 years, I reckon these cars will be in the "Barge Bargains Vol 192" thread with the "has it had its turbo done yet?" being asked. Not exactly a job for the home mechanic is it!

I don't see what's so crazy about this?

It's not particularly time consuming and allows superb access to many components.

It sounds much more bonkers than it is to most, because we're just not used to it with modern (monocoque) vehicles. Coming from a TVR background, it sounds pretty fine to me.
