This is all well and good but it does make a chap think "well that's cheap, but how cheap is an XJR"?

Oh. . . . bugger. £2550

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...

That looks lovely and is criminally cheap. It's another of those cars, that if I wasn't spending money on the TVR this year, I'd want to buy for no other reason than I really want it. smile
I've just ran an insurance quote on that very car, I could not believe my eyes compared to what I pay for my humble Accord. The itch is getting itchier and my man maths can justify it easily hehe

I must say though they're not as big as some of you have suggested, I've seen these things dwarfed by modern Focus' and the like in car parks.
If you need a little extra shove - do it. They are magnificent, spellbinding cars. One tickle of the throttle and that supercharger will suck you right in.

An X300 isn't expensive to insure for what it is and has low road tax too.

The (near identical) XJ40 was regarded as vast back in 1986 - but as cars have grown, how they've shrunk! They're not big cars now. A modern Focus is about the same width as the X300, but quite a bit shorter of course. Jags are also very low which makes them look smaller than they are.

I have one and there's no finer way to travel. The bork is all relative - even if you made it a minter, you'd still only be down about 5 grand including the purchase price. I have so far replaced most of the things listed in the original advert, but then I'm never going to sell it. Unless maybe the right V12 shows up.

I had a x300 when I was 19. Friedns used to tease that I'd borrowed it from my grandfarther but as far as I was concerned it was fantastic.

Loved the x300. Would buy another in a flash. Mine was a 1995 (N) XJ6 (3.2 straight6) Auto in Sapphire Blue with Oatmeal Leather and of course it had Walnut, lots of Walnut!!! I put a set of Diamler Century Chrome Alloys on it. It looked the spuds.

If only I wasn't now in company cars I'd have another. Ummmm maybe a weekend shed for Sundays and high days.

My dad has an x308 Diamler Super V8 LWB which is a fantastic car. Love pulling up next to quick cars like boxters and and showing them how quick a barge can move.

I used to drive my dad's X300 (the one i posted a couple of pages back) when I was 19. My friends could barely contain their jealously and loved being wafted around in it. Classy as fk.

I really wanted one of these before I drove one, but I was disappointed. Not as silent or as smooth as I was expecting and certainly not as fast. Would still have bought one but I got tired looking for the spec I wanted.
I don't like the beige seats/beige trim/beige steering wheel (with dirt accents at 10to2)/beige carpets/light walnut trim that 90% of them seem to be, and there were very few of the (to my eyes) nicer 'black everything' trim.

I do like these.

The correct interior colour is of course cream.

I had some form of old Jag a while ago, sadly even though it had a lack of mayonaise in the water, it drank water like a thirsty elephant. 3 litres in 40 miles sort of drinking habit.

I had to get rid of, for the shed money it cost the potential cost of the repair was more than it was worth, and ever since then I've avoided them.

I love my x308 XJR. I've owned it for 7 years now and have driven it quite hard over that time. Most reliable car I've owned bar the Corvette. Haven't done the timing chain tensioners yet (still on the 2nd generation) but it's only just turned 60k miles. I ache for a Quattroporte but I'm still hooked on the "big cat". The supercharger whine is addictive. Here is a link to a few laps at my local track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTvnnzpJnU8
It held up quite well but the brakes were shot after 5-6 laps. Of course it's not designed for the track but it was fun anyway. It will be hard to part with...

Hats off to your sir.

That is just EPIC!

I only sold my XJR two weeks ago, but after seeing that, I want another one now!!

Anyone looking at buying one of these should really consider this:

http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/1998...

Dark wood trim with cream leather is the best interior combo.

It's had alot of the major / common points addressed, so should be in good mechanical fettle.

The advert is pretty concise and the owner seems to know his stuff, which is always promising.

Someone please buy it before I pick up that phone..... !!!

I bought a 'cheap' XJR8 about six months ago...

I love it!

It's an absolute pain in the arse to be honest and it's been in the garage, (on aggregate), on a weekly basis for many reasons since I got it but there's just something about that type of Jaguar that makes me grin ear to ear whenever I get behind the wheel.

They're cheap to buy, sure! And £2k - £3k won't buy you any more bang for buck, but they aren't cheap to keep. (Or at least keep good!)

There're so many parts on mine that ideally need repaired/replaced, (the driveshafts for one!). The wear can be compensated for. It's not ideal, but I'd be looking at the cost of the car to put it back to factory spec'.

You can't take it to a back street garage, (or even some more respected ones!!), for anything other than an oil or brake pad change and Jaguar themselves probably don't want to know for that age of car and specialists are thin on the ground particularly up here.

Would I advise anyone to buy one?

NO!

Would I buy another?

Probably not, but I want to keep mine as long as I can.

Oh, and does the thing move?

OH YEAH! biglaughdriving

I had a '96 4L LWB Sovereign on LPG, I loved that car, kept it for 8 years, and almost cried when I sold it. I bought it at 120k, and sold it at 325k, when I fancied a change. In the 8 years of ownership, I kept to regular servicing, and washed it a least twice. From memory the only things it needed was a battery, discs, pads, 2 rear silencers, few tyres, couple of coil packs.

I replaced it with an X350, which is nice, more modern, more economical (that's on LPG too), definitely quicker .... but as good ? I don't think so.

This picture is from the day I sold mine; a few years ago. 325K and 15 years old at the time.

The V8 model has the same bodyshell as the straight six but everything else is different and the bork factor is significantly higher.

The straight six can be handled by a man with a spanner as there is nothing that requires a laptop for reprogramming, except maybe throttle body alignment. The straight six engine itself is nigh-on indestructible. No-one removes engines from rusty X300s before they get weighed in because hardly anyone ever needs a replacement.

If you are in any doubt from the picture, straight sixes will be on an M to a P plate (maybe a few early Rs) and have square reflectors set into the bumper and a solid chrome strip across the top of each bumper. V8s are R to 02, have missing chrome under the grill and boot (where it always got damaged) and oval reflectors.

Hardly a car to run on a shoestring which really is what shed motoring is about. Theyre slow, unwieldy and one of the biggest money pits on the road. Ok if you dont mind the golfing/pipe smoking/grandad image though..
