Yeah.. I must say this is on my to-do list ( after Tulisa and Cheryl cole hehe)

But the potential bork costs are scaring me a little.
The R107 as long as you stay on top of the rust is reasonable, how are the big service costs on these cars? Also, do they rust inside-out or was that only the 70s russian steel carS?

I admire you for buying the car however I can't help but think that it's the poor mans ferrari but yet for the money you have spent you could get some lovely cars.

I hope it's reliable and am glad you are enjoying it, each to their own but as a petrolhead if you like it that's all that matters.
He has got a lovely car.

Perception and reality are very different with the Mondy. It was more expensive new than the 308, 328 or 348 of the time, and outsold them.

Do you really think people in that market would have bought a rubbish car for so much money in such numbers?
Why not, the Jag XJS sold like hot cakes wink
You have never, clearly, owned an XJS.

Very nice, I like Mondial T's in dark colours....nero/tan my fav colour combo, though i've never seen this combo on a T in RHD, how many exsist ? Th earlier Mondial's are cheaper to service/belts etc as you dont have to remove the engine, but the T is so much nicer inside, with some extra poke.

The Wales trip was an exceptional test if i am honest, most of my friends were in on the sweep stake for how long it would last. Trying to keep a bunch of Sevens, a WRX Scooby and other more modern and capable machines moving at a sensible but entertaining pace through the pouring rain over the small mountain roads was asking quite a bit, but it passed surpassing all (and my own) expectations. I'll not go into details as such here, but the damages were all easily fixed and should be considered as exceptional costs rather than common faults.
A good trip and the car impressed us all.

Looking forward to this year.

From the research I did, this is the only UK Manual T in this colour, the other in this colour is a velo (auto), so 2 in this colour.

David, we are just putting some plans together, I'll be sending round an email shortly.

OP is obviously going to use this car but the main thing that puts me off a cheap(ish) old Ferrari is the fact that most of these 25-35 year old cars seem to have done about 1000 miles a year. It's true, they nearly all seem to have 25-35k miles on the clock so it begs the question....are owners frightened to use them and do they have good reason?

What are the implications of using these like an old 911 and racking up the miles?
The mileage thing is purely down to values - if you put miles on a new Ferrari you make it unsaleable. People think it's just "reducing it's value" but it's more than that, you make it so a dealer won't take it and you'll get VASTLY less for it (and have to spend way longer selling it).

I agree that cars like this benefit from proper use tho - any car used regularly and maintained properly will always be more reliable than a car stored for long periods. I know someone who used a Lotus Esprit S2 Turbo as his daily driver for 2 years and had no more issues than I had with a Mondeo in the same period - for example - but most people leave them in garages for weeks/months at a time and are surprised when they are started to find they have an issue.

Most Light bulbs blow when they're turned-on - not when they're running smile

Cars you drive daily develop faults slowly and you get used to them - cars you use once in a while always feel wonky smile

I watched one of the 'Used Car Show' episodes on a channel I cannot remember, and they had a convertible version, for the buyer. Now I (unless I pay a great deal for adaptations), drive an manual but, IF I could and was looking for a Ferrari, it think this would be the one of my choice. It seems they are cheaper to buy but, still they come with the Ferrari running costs however, have great, sound, fairly good speed and therefore make a good weekend car, especially if you have children.

For me it would have to be the 412 or 512, due to both being auto, as it would be easier to adapt and fit my chair in. However, I think they are all models which are underrated and certainly offer those who can afford the running costs, a less expensive way into the Ferrari brigade.

I'm not generally an F car fan, but the Mondial is the ugly child in their family.

In some ways, that's an interesting enough reason to want one, but I suspect people will get their hopes up if you tell them you drive a Ferrari and be quite disappointed when they walk out to it.

Mate of mine in Bristol had one from new (well his dad did on a company car policy) which we used to bomb about in when I was around 20 (1991/2 and a student at uni). Car was a Cabrolet and we used to hoon up and down Cribbs Causeway before there was anything there, 4 up with the top down. Great fun going through MacDonalds drive-through.

It was practically brand new and the passenger door card would fall off every time you closed the door, build quality was junk, really, really rubbish but the sound and speed and Ferrari-ness was sublime. Loved it and made a change from the clapped out rust buckets most students had, if they had anything smile

I bought one in late November (so not used it much at all yet)

So far its cost me a couple of hundred for cam belts and oils, but nothing serious yet as its only got 25k on the clock.

The electrics are shockingly wk though.

I've already had to re-solder the entire fuse box, the diagnostics panel had 8 burned out components, and the fog light switch in the dash started to smoke while i was sat at the lights in Loughborough.

Other than that, its extremely smooth to drive (although i'm still getting used to the almost complete lack of 2nd and 3rd gear when cold)and it sounds incredible over 5k rpm.

I get fed up with all those adverts on telly asking for money to save a starving baby/goat/dog whatever, but I would donate to save this ... almost makes me weep.

We disagree on new alfas, it happends wink
Mark, how does a typical five-year plan look on the mondial service and costwise?

These cars are getting to an age where services tend to become very individual re a cars needs.
I understand the T is a bit more costly to maintain than a 3.2 - how much would you realistically budget for over say 5 years...?
