Whilst it's no work of art I don't think it's especially ugly actually.. as for it's "niche" I suppose you could point at how well the Mondeo hatch sells?
Mondeo hatches sell well because fleet manager love them and they're cheap, stupidly cheap if you buy in bulk. This is ahole ugly, I usually give them the benefit of the doubt, I remember when the E36 came out and everyone hated it, my local dealer ran radio ads saying they still had good stocks of the 'Classic Three Series" but after a bit it looked good, even the craziest Bangle jobs looked ok after a while (stupid arse on the 7 aside) but this has just taken the ugly BMW crown from the X6.
I don't think it looks too bad. But then the 3 series hardly raises my pulse either. If I wanted to get me mountain bike in the back of my daily driver (say 3 series) - they usually have fixed seats and a fixed parcel shelf like the A4. With this thing you could get your bike in there without needing the estate.
It probably fills it's purpose in life but a pretty dull one at that. Euro bland cracked to a T but the slow evolutionary styling of the premium brands must weigh heavily in their used prices / marketing and design strategy.
That's got me thinking about the countryman think - a chance for BMW - Mini designers to have some freedom - nice work boys, just a BMW x6 reduced in the pan and covered in smarties.

Can't see what you are all complaining about.
It just looks like a standard 3 series with a hatchback - which takes some looking at to see it has no boot.
BMW finally builds a hatchback for it's most popular model shocker.

I had a 3 series saloon and god knows how many times I had to borrow my mates vectra hatch for trips to B and Q etc...
