Is that the lowest score I have seen for a piston heads article in many years. Awful and I am a huge BMW fan!

Bonkers in my opinion and surely this is a model for other markets.

5 series chassis?
The 5 Series GT is based on 7 Series's chassis. But, I'm pretty sure this 3 Series GT is just a normal 3 Series saloon with a different roof line...

The 3 series and estate look lovely, this looks like the ugly sister
Why??
Because there is 5-series GT.

1-series GT is coming too...

yes

Same as the 5GT - it has the 7 floorplan...
So hang on - it's a 3 series, based on a 7 series?!

I have to now go and think about the good old BMWs of yore...
3 based on 5, 5 based on 7 smile

I have read that it has got more legroom than a 5 series.

But I still don't understand this model. Its grim.

Isn't this like a modern interpretation of the Rover SD1?

Except the Rover was cool and good looking and this is just, well, a bit crap.

W.T.F. is that? Another blobby BMW, completely lost the plot, still the Qandt's will be happy to flog this in china. Since Bangle arrived and went BMW have completely lost their mojo for me, the cars have got uglier, fatter, and totally anonymous. The planned 4 series coupe being cloned from the 6 will not be admired by most M3 drivers, and they are presumably an important 3 customer segment. For me I definitely pass on this dogs breakfast. Why do premium brands such as BMW need to pursue mass market numbers as it will be to Jaguars advantage when their 3 series rival appears.

Awful looking things.

Still I am sure someone we be along in a minute to tell me just how wonderful it will drive and how it has the balance of an F1 car.....

BMW need to look up 'GT'. I thought GT was Gran Tourer, usually reserved for the likes of the Ferrari Daytona or DB9...

Not just adding a hatchback to the range and then mis-labeling it with the badge of a smaller model.
Weird and it does nothing for their already questionable range.

Just checked the classifieds for used prices:

530d GT 09 plate, 70 k on clock - from £20k
As above but a standard 5 series - from £10k

That's a huge difference

so....the 3 series has eventually turned into a BMW mondeo.

Soon to be badly parked in a supermarket near you.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to call it the BMW 4 series GT.
The flaring kidney grills are what ruin the design the most. What they should have done was to incorporate a production version, front design of the 4 series concept and then apply an exclusive headlight and bumper design for this car.

I dont think it looks as bad as alot of people are making out. Sure its not the best looking car but it looks better than the five series GT in my eyes which just lookss inflated.

I also dont get why people are saying they can't see why people wouldn't take the touring over this? I guess the main reason would be that people dont want an estate (where did "touring" ever come from)yet want the extra space this can provide.

Very niche, not my cup of tea but im sure it will sell by the boat load to middle management types.

Nope, it's based on the 3 Touring chassis.

I like it.

5 series.

5GT is based on the 7 series.
Let me get this right just so I'm sure..

The 3-series GT is based on the 5-series platform & the 5-series GT is based on the 7-series platform?

I used to really like the way you knew exactly what was what regarding BMW - it all seems very confusing now & they do seem to make a lot of cars which are solving a problem nobody has ever had!

Seems like madness to me but the thing is when Audi & Mercedes are also at it then it will be a very brave manufacturer that says enough is enough. There will be enough people queueing up to buy this car I suppose it doesn't matter what anyone here says. Didn't Sniff Petrol have a spoof advert some years ago of a wheelbarrow filled with st but having a BMW badge on the front? Seems to be coming true!

I suppose I could've said I used to like them, when they were producing stuff like the CSL, but seen as you've gone for my car history to make a point, I won't.

wker.
