It continues to amaze me how angry new VW Group products seem to make people on here.
Just waiting for a comment saying its a "dressed up Skoda" and then we're thread complete!

Personally I think it looks great. I think the current Beetle is one of the best penned cars on sale at the moment (mass market). The yellow doesn't alter that. A bit pricey, but great looking IMO.

Next it'll be a Transporter Van Homage to the Splittie in a nice 'period retro' two-tone paint scheme.
Urgh.
And that'll be £65,000 Urgh.
They'll probably do well in the US and Canada where our insane £38k will be a slightly more palatable $38k.
In the meantime, for the few that will be sold here VW will just marvel at the British mugs that are around and selling one of these will probably equate to as much profit as four of five basic ones. Ker Ching.

Have to agree with 300 there!Someone made a good point that you can spec a pretty mundane car these days to well over £30k, without much of a problem. Nevertheless, i agree £38k is a lot of money for what you're getting. I imagine the Golf R Cabriolet is being built in a factory which cannot do Haldex (the same reason why the Scirocco R is FWD).
For comparison, the Golf R (hatch) commands a £4k premium for the pleasure of AWD (although i should mention the interior is more modern, and the car is of higher quality in general - the same reason it is was a few quid more than the Audi S3). The Golf R Cabriolet however is TWELVE THOUSAND more than the Scirroco R.
Even i can't justify that, and i'm saying this having spent £38k on a Golf R hatch (it was actually £40k - i got a discount). What is difficult to convey to someone who hasn't spent any time in it is that it is a car that simply does everything very well. There really aren't that many cars out there that do the same all-round job.

Am I the only one questioning vw's misguided opinion that an original 1303s beetle is "the most sought after"? the curved windscreen, macpherson strut beetle, most commonly known as a "wrong-un" is what you end up buying if you set out to buy a beetle but have no idea what you are doing. hmm, so maybe the modern homage is correct! Surely if your buying bug sought after must be pre '67, but preferably pre '57?

Saying something is one of the best penned cars on the market at the moment is hardly a compliment, based on the dross manufacturers let out of the factory doors at the moment.
I think they are taking the piss though, nobody could say that about the new new Beetle. As for the pricing, somehow, somewhere, for some people, VW make "desirable" cars. I don't know why, but a girl from our department said, -and I quote- a VW Golf has always been her dream car. They must be doing something right when they can make the most boring looking and driving hatchback on the market a "dream car" to some?

So, simply a new "new" Beetle in yellow with some stickers?
It's already available with the 2.0L 210BHP TSi, so why would you pay more just for some stickers?
The >40 grand FWD Cabrio is truly ridiculous! That's over $60,000 U.S. Dollars!!! Even the generally gullible Americans & most die-hard VW enthusiasts over here would laugh their asses off over that price!
And that's coming from an American VW enthusiast who has a MkIII Jetta VR6 turbo!
