Had a ST202 GT for 2 years and loved it. Great GT car. Then moved onto a ST205 GT4 and it was a massive disappointment, too heavy and uninspiring to drive. Had a drive in a Evo 6 and the difference was night and day. Sold the GT4 and bought the Evo.

The original 1994 cars all came with the 3 spoke alloys as on the silver GT-Four shown.

The high rise rear spoiler was achieved by using Raiser Blocks. These were supplied on the original 5000 WRC models which were required for the rally version.

Later cars had different 6 spoke alloy and a lower rear spoiler.

If I remember correctly, in the final version of the GT-Four Toyota reintroduced the high rear spoiler along with recaro seats and projector headlights. (1998-1999)

I would love one of these one day but I hope to keep my 3S-GTE to the aft for the foreseeable future.
I used to run MR2 Turbos a few years ago - one of them had been quite heavily breathed on.

It remains to this day one of the most savagely accelerative cars I have ever driven, and that includes a collection of race-spec cars I got to drive on track.

Few cars on this planet offer so much bang for your buck.

Magnificent and great to see one so well cherished. I had a black low-spoiler version in the mid 90's for a year or so as a company car (long story, but basically it had come as part of a smaller company acquisition, and since nobody knew what it was, it languished in the "handback pool" until I noticed it would only cost me £11 a month more than the Astra 1.8 Sport I was running at the time. It was only a few years later I realised how barmy that all was).

Genuinely quick for it's day, handled well, loads of grip, 25 mpg and a brilliant, refined long distance car to boot. I remember driving a couple of lads down to Newquay for a stag do and amazing them with some 120mph+ sweepers and acceleration to overtake pretty much anything.

Happy days.

You spent nearly 3 years looking for a good one and after 3000 miles you consider selling.

Why?

I really like them, but they need breathed on. With the right set up they are very quick at covering ground.

Superb story, great car with lots of pedigree. A lot of love has obviously been invested in that car..so much nicer when you see an older performance car looking like it just left the factory and totally 'un- barryed'!..

Great car, if only it wasn't so ugly smile
Somewhat overlooked amongst Imprezas and Evos, which means insurance should hopefully be lower.

Also, I wouldn't think about using dealership to service anything but box-standard 1.4/1.6 boring runabout, and even then I'd think twice. Anything else, and a performance car especially, needs specialists attention. Not kids doing NVQ who just do what computer tells them to do...

My wife owned an unmolested white ST205 for several years and which we thoroughly enjoyed, brilliant performance with Japanese reliability. Some years previously she also owned a Corolla GT Coupe. Wish we had kept them...I still have the original set of Celica forged (?) wheels in the garage attic, must do something about selling them.

Loved my years of GT4 ownership, never had a 205 (faff in GT4 circles because owners are always faffing about with them) had 3 ST185s which went for a variety of reasons, mainly due to my pretentions as a drifting god. One of the few cars that really inspires a great deal of nostalgia and love in me, if I had the space I'd buy one like a shot, alas the wife no longer lets me keep a fleet like the old days!

He's only done 3000 miles in two years, hardly enough to comment on servicing cost...
26mpg not not that bad?! Really??

I ran a GT4 for 4 years, had to sell due to having a few months off driving after a shoulder op. Best car I ever owned (though I also loved my 55 Split Screen Minor). Mine was standard, even had the original wheels. Used to get 30 mpg on a run, but dropped near single figures on a trip over Buttertubs Pass and Tan Hill! On most roads few cars could stay with it. Never had it flat out, but was pulling like a train at 120 with 2000rpm left on the tacho. It went south to be a track day car.

Everything is relative - if I could average 26 mpg out of my 156 I'd be a happy man.

Considering how these cars go and their age, 26mpg isn't too shabby at all.

Had one for over 3 years done about 20k in mine little mods done to take mine just shy of 300bhp. Low 20's mpg wise mainly A & B road driving can get mid to high 20's on a run cheap insurance for what it is (went down 80 quid a year when I changed from a 1.6 mx5) had to do a clutch on mine but used a good specialist.

Excellent cars and great to see them so well looked after.

Personally I think it looks every bit as good as a GT86.. wink

Indeed. A whiteline rear ARB to quell some of the understeer, and some light breathing modifications (mainly a de-cat) improves the way they go significantly.

If driven reasonably vigorously, 26mpg is a pipe dream. I used to average (very) low twenties.

I sold mine to move to France. Miss it like I would both my kidneys, life's just not the same without it.

I have driven and worked on a lot of St205's and my share of St185's. Funny thing with them is some are really quick whilst others are slow, test drove some slow ones and never got to the bottom of their slowness. Thankfully mine was a quick one, especially after a few small mods. I gave it a front mount with bespoke stainless hard pipe kit, a Blitz Access ecu and upped the boost from 0.9bar to 1.1 bar. I kept the cat on after trying both but found boos creep issues without, to me there was no difference in performance. With that set up it regularly dynoed round 340bhp on club rolling road days.

As for being lardy, they weigh in at around 1350kg

A white line rear anti roll bar is a must. Suspension can be expensive but you should get 60k miles out of a new set of arms.

I loved my ST205 which looked remarkable like the one listed earlier on this thread, had to double take it wasn't it. Though mine was a later model facelift low spoiler JDM import that had the aforementioned WhiteLine rear anti-roll bar, 18" OZ wheels, Tein springs on standard brand new dampers after removing the really horrible Tein adjustable coil-over suspension it arrived in the country with, TRD top mounts, TRD quick shift, TRD front seats & only ST205 I ever saw with a genuine Toyota MOMO steering wheel which was nicer than standard. Also had genuine C-one front & rear aprons & Toyota side skirts.





But for me the best bit was having SEGA Rally on my driveway as it was my daily driver on a 60 mile commute while my integrale lived in comfort in the garage.

I used to really like these, a mate had one that I drove a few times & it drove nice, I enjoyed watching them rally aswell.
