John 'O' Groats To Lands End - Our Story & Potential Record?
Discussion
Hope he’s got a good lawyer, no doubt the CPS/ police will pursue this. if he’s gone to the press himself surely he had the common sense to speak to a lawyer before telling the story?.
I have a friend who done a “getaway in Stockholm” type video and posted it on YouTube, he was hammered by the prosecution services but in the end he got away with it through ,ack of proof or something.

I can't imagine any scenario where the police walk away from this now. It's too public, and they will feel they need to send a clear message that this record is not up for grabs.
If I was a traffic cop I'd try to persuade my superiors that the obvious way to stop such attempts would be to do the trip in a marked up police car making full use of legal exemptions and set a record no civilian could hope to match.I might even volunteer to drive the car myself and save my colleagues this onerous chore.
Did anything every come of this in the end? (The 2nd OPs story)
I remember hearing about it when it was first reported, around May 2018, and pretty much every mainstream media source had articles (albeit, largely carbon copies of each other) on this story, and it was blowing up.
I can remember there being lots of outrage, and supposedly the case being referred to every Police Department that the journey went through, and given this & the amount of noise there was at the time, I'd expect there to have been some follow up, or at least some news since?
However, I googled the story just now (this is actually how I found this PH thread, didn't realise it was originally posted here!), and can't find anything new related to it, since the original articles?

I was expecting the thread revival to be someone thinking that now has to be the perfect time to attempt a record as the roads will be as empty as they are ever going to be.
You just have to avoid any Police 'essential journey' checks. Perhaps copy the 'Cannonball Run' film and do it in an Ambulance (or toilet roll delivery lorry)

Just curious...is there a "stock" vehicle that could do it without stopping for fuel? I'm thinking big diesel "barge". 730Ld has an 88 litre fuel tank. Possibly doable if you're not going for the record but would sustained 3+ figure speeds kill the fuel consumption too much?

It's possible to tickle something like a passat diesel to >900 miles on a tank.https://www.carthrottle.com/post/cannonball-record...

Certainly nothing standard could do it at >100mph though. Or even >70mph.

Clarkson did London to Edinburgh and back on a single tankful in an Audi A8 V8 diesel, which is near enough 800 miles (LEJOG is 840, according to gogglemaps), but he had to really nurse it home at snail's pace.
So one would expect that if he had picked the 3 litre V6 diesel version instead that it would have done it comfortably? A new RRS has an 89 litre fuel tank but that weight, 4WD and those aerodynamics would really kill the mpg at high speeds and less agile in the twistier sections. 730Ld still seems like the best bet.Incidentally, I seem to remember that Clarkson chose the Jaguar XJR over the XJ diesel for the "race against the sun" on Top Gear (West to East coast run) because although the diesel could probably have done it without having to stop for a refuel, the XJR was faster and more "heroic" somehow, so I can kind of understand why our friends picked the 911/Audi S5.
Out of interest, with it being caught on video for millions to see, how did Clarkson manage to avoid the wrath of the BIB when the unofficial JOG-LE record-holder seems to have landed himself in trouble?

From memory he limped the whole journey. No heaters or stereo etc and sat at 54mph (or whatever the most economic speed is) without cruise. Think it rained and he didn't use lights or wipers too.Looks like the sticky stuff has hit the fan

Personally I'd have taken all the kit off the car as soon as I'd finished the run. Looks like pitsmansboots (Steve Callaghan) has grassed him up from PH

How could he have been so stupid to buy all those 'countermeasures' in his own name and address, and worse still, then keep them all and the car following the publicising of his record.
Absolutely asking to be prosecuted.
If it was me, I would have bought a cheap but capable car using cash, in a false name if possible, bought all the stuff like the flake plates and countermeasures using a fake name PayPal account/email address or using cash, and then when I had done the run, I would have simply scrapped the car to the dodgiest 'paperwork free' scrapyard I could find, and destroyed all evidence of the car or the countermeasures.
Anytime I used the internet to buy my countermeasures or tell my story I would have done it anonymously and using a wifi hotspot on a throwaway phone and pay as you go sim. I would have bought a disposable laptop just for the purposes of internet access for my crime.
I would even have bought a throwaway pay as you go mobile and left my real phone at home while I did the run. Everything during the run I would have used cash for as well, and worn a disguise such as glasses, cap, and grown a beard in case my face was seen on any CCTV or traffic cameras.
Isn't this all proper GCSE crime stuff?
I mean absolutely fair play to him for his effort, which was impressive, but he seriously let himself down by being caught.
When the Americans do the 'coast to coast' Cannonball records they take the planning and implementation very, very seriously, and think carefully about all the stuff I said above. They even enlist spotters all over the country to radio ahead telling them to keep their foot down or back off.

Not really, it only took me 5 mins to come up with a list like that, and that's before I even considered it in detail!Surely any normal person would think of those things?? I'm just surprised thats all!
If you are going to carry out a pre-planned crime, you just need to consider everything carefully, properly, and in detail.
If it was me, I would consider every option, and leave no stone unturned.
