RE: McLaren reveals P1 interior
Discussion
The Mclaren isn't about being shouty is it.
It's almost a next stage up from a 911. ( Unless you go for it in Mclaren Orange)
It's for someone that doesn't want the "look at me, look at me" of a Ferrari or Lambo.
And it's definitely not a 20-40 yr old drivers car - I've only seen 50+ year olds in them so far. They've all looked like architects to me and driving them very conservatively !
It doesn't do it for me. From what I was told from people that have driven them, it's not an event. It's a very easy car to drive not involving at all.

As said how cool would it be if McLaren offered a three tier model range, covering Cayman to Zonda levels.
To sell a car at Cayman levels they'd have to either- sell a huge number, and so erode brand equity
- share a huge amount of content with an existing car, and so erode brand equity
I think they'd also need to find some big money, or sell-out to a very big boy, in order to fund a project to build a car that's better than a base Porsche at base Porsche money. Impossible on their own.

The McLaren P13 will cost between £60,000 to £80,000 and is set to be revealed at the Geneva Car Show in 2013. The spokesperson added: “It will compete in a similar market to Porsche. We are trying to put cars out that at every single level of the sportscar automotive market.”

I wonder at the importance of 'saving 1.5Kg' in a car when the driver is likely to weigh dozens of times that - when a couple of litres of fuel weigh more than that too.
It's just a bit silly. If it needs lacquering, lacquer it - if not, then don't do it and say "it's not lacquered because it doesn't need lacquering".
I remember Mazda UK once suggested that the pedals in the RX7 were 'drilled for added lightness' - to which some wag highlighted that a driver with a few coins in their pocket would counteract that instantly (they're drilled so you don't slip-off them surely??)
Also - saving 1.5Kg but adding AC and a sound system - erm - no, just no.
I realise it's all a mix of Steve Jobs-like fictional 'design' and the usual marketing fluff - I realise they're selling a high performance MacBooklaren and all that
Hey ho

Well, I was referring to Cayman levels, but I'll be completely amazed if they release a car at less than £80k. My hat remains uneaten as yet, but I won't be too proud to chow down if they prove me wrong.
I would love a McLaren at around that price but, like you, I cannot see them having a car at less than £100K.Edited to add: I would LOVE to be wrong

My mate is 30 and has one and we had a play with my z06 vs his 12c (on a closed road officer)...he was absolutely thrashing it and I'm hoping to convince him to join me on a track day next week so that blows your theory out of the water..I also know another guy (by proxy) who has a red one and he is 35.These McLaren releases just never EXCITE....how can a bit of info about saving 1.5kgs be an exciting thing about this car? If I was McLaren I would actually make sure that there was at least something to get your adrenaline up about it.
Otherwise it's just a very geeky science project isn't it?

So, when Ferrari did this type of thing with the F40, it was OK, but as McLaren are doing something like it now, some folk are not happy about it...hmmmm.
Personally, LOVE it.
Put the electronic/ mechanical stats side by side for those two cars and try and view your comparison from that angle? It's a totally different kettle of fish.Personally, LOVE it.

The Mclaren is just too nice for me
Still if someone gave me one ... actually I'd swap it for a ZR1 !
I think it looks fantastic. Trouble is, and I know that this is irrational, I just can’t get past the fact that it’s LHD only. I understand the reasons behind it, I know that the Ferrari will be the same, but the fact that a company purporting to be British can’t engineer a RHD car (when foreign manufacturers such as Pagani and Koenigsegg can) is massively disappointing. I’m sure it won’t stop it selling but for me it’s a missed opportunity.
