RE: Golf GTD announced

It's an F30. FEM body control module went, intermittent fault with nsf indicator and front suspension issues. Nowhere near as well put together as the E90 I had before. Or as good to drive without the expensive adaptive suspension.
First service coming up due now. 800 miles to go (coming up 19k). Hasn't used a drop of oil, even after an Autobahn dash where it managed a GPS recorded 139 mph, 4 up and fully laden.
Great performance and economy compromise, but it doesn't feel like £28k worth of car. But it costs sod all in BIK so was kind of a default choice from the list available.
I take on board what you're saying about the faults, but I don't agree that it's worse to drive than the E90, having run an E90 for about a year and a half and having test driven an F30.First service coming up due now. 800 miles to go (coming up 19k). I just hope the F30 I've ordered doesn't have any faults.

Glad they finally ditched those horrid "five hole" wheels!
Must say, it looks good. I'm a fan of conservatively styled cars, after all.
I know the combination of "diesel" and "VW" is enough to elicit a storm of moans and groans amongst the PH community, but the specs seem interesting enough: 280lb.-ft. is quite a lot for a small car, and the quoted acceleration figure is in MkIII VR6 territory.
I'd like to know what a tuned version could be capable of. I'd imagine 340+lb.-ft. is within reach, probably with fairly minimal mods. I'm also a big fan of torque, and I think you could turn one of these into a real sleeper!

No, it was a boggo-spec ED.

Interesting. I haven't spoken to anyone at work who switched from E90s to F30s in the same spec and found the handling to be of the same standard. It's very "floppy" compared to the E90. Rolls a lot more, and loses composure over challenging surfaces at much lower speeds. Still a beautifully balanced car, with lovely accurate steering, but needs a suspension upgrade.C
A much nicer car than the E90 overall though. Nicer to sit in, more interesting to look at, more rear leg and shoulder room, better equipment levels etc. And on any kind of run, you have to drive like a complete tool to see much under 60 mpg. Which isn't bad for something that will also do 140 mph.

We are going slightly off topic here, but your comment about the F30 suspension being a touch soft is pretty much exactly as I found it when I took one for an extended test recently looking for something to replace a mk6 GTD. Looked at the 320D in sport ( not M-sport ) trim.A much nicer car than the E90 overall though. Great at lower speeds, absorbing potholes much better than previously, but once at speed it was too soft for my liking. Crests and dips unsettled it noticeably.
Far from bad, just not as good as I had hoped having read the adulation from various media sources beforehand, I ended up deciding that it wasn’t for me and ordering something else.
Should point out that my budget wasn’t going to stretch to the adaptive damper version that BMW craftily gave to the press for road tests, which is by all accounts rather good!!
Interesting that there is a fair bit of talk about the 3-series in this thread too, when the article was about a Golf.

This and the 320d ED are probably the standout company car choices now when performance and emissions / BIK liability are taken into account. I would certainly look carefully at both if they were on the list next time.I find your thoughts on the F30's dynamics very similar to mine. It's not that it's bad. It's just not excellent. And I too noticed that every early test car supplied by BMW had the Adaptive option selected. I couldn't actually find a review of the car on standard suspension until long after the car was launched.
That said, apart from this, and some truly shocking interior plastics (the creaky, brittle stuff surrounding the climate control and stereo controls wouldn't be out of place in an 80's Renault), as well as the less than perfect reliability of my example, it is a very difficult car to fault. Does everything rather well.

Do we know what changes they made to get the extra power? Hopefully a bit more than a more aggressive map. Would be nice base to work with if it has a bigger turbo, IC and injectors/rail.Must say, it looks good. I'm a fan of conservatively styled cars, after all.

Well dispite the comments, what the shrewder fraternity have noticed that for daily driving whether it be 5k per annum or 30k per annum the gtd represents a great lease car....I placed an order today for one for £179pm on a 6-23 deal..so the price doesn't bother me and its a bargain at that money...I'll run it for a year give it to the wife and get something else next year...job done.
I'm coming from a 635d and a 911 turbo and just sick of the depreciation cars have now so will enjoy leasing for a bit.

Seems as good of a place as any for a question about my GTD.
The fan is really, really loud and comes on early and stays on a fair bit after I'm stopped. Car warms up no problem etc. Also smells a bit when I stop, might just be me 'pushing on'. Infact, it even smells of diesel (as fuel, not exhaust)
Ideas? Or just normal?

It's almost done 3k!
What has that got to do with anything? It will do a dpf regen every thousand miles or so as long as you get it to temperature and keep it there long enough. If you don't it will try and regen and not complete, then you get issues.
How long does it take once up to temp? It gets at least 2 x 40 mins every day and longer on weekends.

My mum has a 2007 Golf GT that has the same fan issue. Could be the regen on her car too. Did they do this on 07 models? Thanks.
Yep, the 2007 Golf GT has a DPF, so it will need to do a regen periodically. It's perfectly normal, most of the time I'm completely unaware my GTD is doing it, but there has been a few occasions when it has started doing one near to the end of a journey and has subsequently been interrupted when I've turned the car off. If it has happened a few times in close succession I'd take the car for a good long drive.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
