Here's something similar-ish they had a go at 26-odd years ago !!

Wow you've got to hand it to VW if they really make that! Must have taken some balls to put that infront of the board........... Pretty niche car, but and it's a big but, if the price is right, and it gets a trendy/cult following, which with that styling it might, it could well be the new "prius" for the Hollywood A lister to be seen in!

It's going to be a 30-40k car for sure; I like that VW just sometimes go 'fuggit' and build things simply because they can. They're engineering the motor from this into an up! model too, aiming for it to be ready in 18 months.

I think in real terms this will struggle to do anymore than about 100mpg or so.
I think it actually will be the opposite. A struggle to do significantly less. It's pretty much impossible for me to do a sub 60mpg tank driving my Insight normally for the road- 85 leptons for example on a rush day.

As I said, imagine a Dacia version of the insight with a small diesel lump and none of the hyrbid tech; cheap as chips and 100mpg.
A cheap, simple, comfortable family car with good MPG would be something I want on my drive. Each manufacturer should build one, since there are enough serial Peugeot buyers, for instance, who just buy a new version of the same car they've had.louiebaby said:

CFRP Anti roll bars, magnesium wheels and carbon ceramic matrix dont shout affordable commuter to me. Seems the camera and screens instead of door mirrors is progressing aswell.
I WANT ONE!

The dash looks like it's moved over from the VW UP so that makes sense. I've been waiting for car manufacturers to actually do the obvious, not just a half ass evolution, drip feeding us. That setup in the up would be great as an a-b car and I bet they would shift in volumes at the right price point. Really put the twitchers on the mini, a1, etc. I'm looking forward to BMW's cooling looking mini car - if it ever arrives. It's scheduled for 2014-15, something like that.http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/scoop/vw-hybrid-...

That looks great (The concept as well as the styling)
It'll never average 300mpg though; I'd imagine more like 60-80 over a tank.
Based on what?!It'll never average 300mpg though; I'd imagine more like 60-80 over a tank.
You can get 60mpg out of just about any car you want if you put a small-ish diesel engine in it.
And this car is small, light, aerodynamically optimised for max-mpg.
I'd be shocked if it couldn't beat something like a BMW 116d for mpg.
Love it.
To the people saying "Why isn't it this?" or "why isn't it that?"
It's purely a feasibility exercise. A large-scale testbed for a number of new technologies that VW want to test, and early-adopters are prepared to pay to do the testing!
The cheap, mass-production version will come later. But thank God someone is doing it. I can't wait to see the finished thing.

The article said: "Hmmm... now, what does the XL1 remind us of? Oh yes, that’s right – the first-gen Honda Insight wore the same tapered profile and covered rear wheels, for obvious aerodynamic reasons."
I say: "Hmmm... I think Citroen did this in the 1950s with the DS, and then the SM, CX and finally the XM"

Can you see any other similarities between the Insight and the XL1?I say: "Hmmm... I think Citroen did this in the 1950s with the DS, and then the SM, CX and finally the XM"
