RE: SOTW: Honda Civic VTI Aerodeck
Discussion
Having had two of these, one silver and one pirates black they look a whole load better with the vti-s kit and spoiler. Both of mine were on coilovers and handled very well indeed and they really shift with 75bhp shot of nitrous. The only downside is the insurance on all Hondas I can insure a 300bhp Volvo for less
A mate has a VTIs hatch and his is surprisingly unreliable with lots of overheating problems. Also looks dreary (pretty much like the Rover it's based on / that is based on it), rides badly and isn't that quick no matter how much you rag it. On the plus side Aerodeck is a cool name for and estate, i'm surprised Honda didn't stick with it. Anyone remember the Accord Aerodeck? Much better looking car.
"Engine check warning lights and intermittent starting could be EGR valves or TDC sensors on the way out, or a dicky distributor – they can be picked up for about £175 on Fleabay and are easy to fit."
Why put this? Is it a bit of a nay-sayers way of knocking the car? There is no mention in the (albeit brief) advert, and I think you are doing it a bit of a disservice to be honest.
I had one of these, although my ownership was brief, and found it to do exactly what it said on the tin; strangely I went back to the dealer I bought it from (a Honda main stealer) and p/ex it for a 30,000 mile 1980 RS2000 they had just taken in (I got my money back on the Honda and a discount on the RS)
Should have kept hold of that RS in hindsight....

B18C4 in that may not be half as good as B18C6 (UKDM) /B18C5 (USDM) /B18CR (JDM) from an ITR but the internals are strong.
Buy this car, use it as a family wagon. When it's dead, strip that engine out, get Hond-R to put it in an EG, an EK or a DC2 and then give it to Ricky at Racetech to turbo.
Or just do the same thing as you do every week and buy a BMW/Jag/Audi.

I had a Red 5dr Hatch as a company car. Great fun and in 1999 when my max allowance on a lease was a Mondeo 1.8GLX with cloth and a cassette player it was the quickest car I could get and had CD player, Elec Windows, Elec Sunroof, Air Con and half leather. The first week I had it, it took me and 3 mates to Le Mans and it did well holding it's own against some of the more interesting cars in our party.
When it reached the end of it's lease an old boy retiring from the company brought it from the lease company. Nice reliable Civic...he had a shock when he got the insurance cost.

The ONLY thing MB Civics are good for is breaking.
Completely different to the EK (1.6 VTi) in that the chassis is shared with the Rover 45.
I'll have wishbones all round on an EK4 please.

I actually wouldn't mind one of these to replace my ATR as a family car should we need to downgrade to something a bit cheaper. Still retains decent suspension (as shown above), a Torsen LSD and 170bhp of VTEC goodness. Some uprated suspension is all it needs to be a proper hoot whilst looking totally innocuous.

Different floorplan, obviously. Suspension is the same though.
That should be pointed out, it is much the same suspension as fitted to the hallowed DC2 ITR (softer springs and dampers obviously). With an LSD and only 20bhp less too. In an estate car that looks like something your grandad would drive.

Apart from spring rates the suspension on an MB6/Rover45/MG ZS is more or less exactly the same as an EK4. Double wishbone at the front, with a multi-link trailing arm system at the rear.Completely different to the EK (1.6 VTi) in that the chassis is shared with the Rover 45.

If they are so bad, how was the ZS180 praised as one of the best handling FWD cars?
That said, the MB6 is a bit soggy in standard form, so getting ZS180 springs and dampers and ARB's onto it, coupled with replacing all the worn bushes will transform it. Also as I mentioned in another thread, the engine is a little disappointing if you have driven a B16 engined Civic before.

To be fair if the B series has one weakness as the miles rack up it's the distributor, which are quite prone to failure at >100K. Mine died, and a friend has had two go on B16 engined Civics. Why put this? Is it a bit of a nay-sayers way of knocking the car?
