If I had the dosh, which I don't and desperately wanted a McLaren I'd buy it's much cheaper brother. More than enough car for 99.99999% of even the super talented drivers found on here and give the rest to charity.
Money to charity? Really? If you really knew about the way most charities are run, you'd realise that probably wouldn't be the best idea. Effectively, you could very well find yourself lining the pockets of people who'd use your well-intentioned donations to do things like, well, buy this car...Edited by mrclav on Tuesday 26th February 12:32

Which, ironically, would probably go some way towards the head of said charity buying a McLaren P1, given the amount that many of them earn.Amazing car, anyhow. I love that by the sounds of things, every single bit of bodywork is there specifically because it has an aero or cooling purpose.

Soooo, boring. Yep it's super fast, but so what. Way quicker than anyone could possibly exploit on the road and there's loads better track kit for a tenth of the price.
It's no better looking that a host of other "Super Cars" that are a 3rd of the price as well.

I supose there has to be someone on every Hyper-car thread who completely misses the point, but taking the moral high ground is an interesting twist. It's no better looking that a host of other "Super Cars" that are a 3rd of the price as well.

I thought they were making 500. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of buyers are holding off committing until they've seen Ferrari's hand.
I'm not sure what to make of Mclaren blinking first in terms of full revealing of specs. Do they know something about the Ferrari which means they need to try and get P1 buyers before the F150 is announced?
This way all the buzz at Geneva is going to be about the Ferrari.

Actually from the start they said they would make no more than 500 and would judge the market reaction to the car before settling on a final figure. Gone are the days when you can show off your new supercar at a motor show and have 1,000 deposit checks arrive in the mail the following week, unless you are Ferrari who will have already sold out their supercar prior to the motor show anyway.
McLaren have been ahead of the game the whole way through this process. Ferrari have barely talked about their car and don't seem to intend to until Geneva. McLaren did not wish to wait that long - in fact they were ready to go toe-to-toe in Paris with Ferrari until the Ferrari went on ice for another 6 months of development. Let's face it though - Ferrari don't need to publicize the details of their cars to get people to buy them. They said they'd build 500 this time and there are reports of at least 550 strongly interested customers. McLaren will probably benefit from some of Ferrari's cast offs, but generally speaking the people Ferrari have chosen to buy their car will, and some of them will also get P1s or 918s or all three.
Ferrari probably wanted to ensure they'd have the spotlight in Geneva, and it hasn't prevented McLaren from securing enough deposits for the P1 to consider closing the order book as has been reported by several sources.

"I wonder if they'll take a finished XP P1 somewhere for an actual vmax run minus the limiter as they did with the F1."
I have this little voice in my head telling me that it was not Mclaren that went for the original high speed test in the F1, I think it was a privately owned car doing the first 217 run, when that was beaten I think it was about '96 when Mclaren went for their official fatsest run.
I could be writing a load of "Daily Mail"

Loved the F1, big fan of the MP4-12C and even liked the SLR but this does nothing for me.
I don't really understand why though...
For that money I'd be looking at Pagani or Koenigsegg, or just buy an Aventador and an F40.
Strangely, I was thinking almost exactly the same thing, particularly with regard to alternatives.I don't really understand why though...

Having said that, I would imagine that for buyers in this rarified atmosphere (sadly not including me!) the decision is simply yes or no; 'alternative' tends to mean 'as well as'.
Yeah its pretty cool, but it won't be as good as the Ferrari. It just won't be. And isn't the inside a little drab? I mean I know not everyone likes it all fancy inside, but compare to the Pagani for the same sort of price...perhaps its because McLaren is all about the numbers and not much else. Numbers on their own will never be enough! I'd rather a supermodel than a maths teacher.
