It may be fast. It may be a performance superstar. But a looker it isn't.

Much prefer the jewel like Pagani or Koenigsegg. Fast enough, and wonderful to look at inside and out.

Can't help but thinks this is slow compared to an Agera R and the Hennessey Venom...
P1 registers a faster time than the Agera R to 200 khp - <7.0s for the P1 and 7.5s for the Agera R. The Agera R recovers that deficit to get to 300 kph faster than the P1 with a time of 14.5s. The P1s time has been noted as being at less than 17.0s, but the P1 has significantly more downforce (which induces drag) than the Agera R has to contend with, and it lacks about 200hp so one would expect it to be slower the faster you try to go.

P1 was not designed for drag racing though, and would likely put up a very imposing time against the Agera R on most if not all race circuits around the world. That's its goal - that's what it was designed for.

I'm not even going to address the Hennessey - I wouldn't loan that guy five bucks based on his past reputation. There's no way I'd consider giving him a million dollars for a hacked up Lotus. If it works for you, that's fine.

I can't see McLaren bothering with a top speed test of the P1. They have been quite open about the fact the car was not designed with that sort of goal in mind and that the design would have require far too many compromises to make a worthy attempt. Think Veyron with its 10 radiators and all the weight and packaging issues to go along with them.
I'd have thought the 10 radiators are more useful at 15 mph in ultra dense traffic than at 230 mph on a desert test track.

Not sure on the styling at all, however the car itself is impressive

Perhaps I'm getting old but cars like this just don't excite me the way they used to when I was a kid.

For something super exotic to own, look at and generally covet I'd far rather a Zonda and for something to drive and enjoy on the road I'd rather a GT3RS.

Perhaps its because I've never owned a playstation?

This is where it gets interesting and McLaren might have just played an absolute belter. In the PR stuff when it was first launched I seem to remember they were talking about the potential cornering speeds and track times the P1 will put out. Let's just say the Ferrari and Porsche are the same speed or even slightly quicker 0-60 but the P1 takes seconds out of them round a track.....that might just be the thing that differentiates it like the F1's 0-60 and top speed did for a decade or more.

If you're playing Top Trumps and/or you are 15 years old, then yes, the car with the highest top speed is clearly better.
+1. I can't believe how abysmal so many Phers's automotive knowledge has to be for them to think that top speed makes a car quick. The higher the top speed, the slower the track time, surely, because of aero and gearing.

But what's the point when the reality is these cars will only ever be driven on tracks on parade laps?

Harry Metcalf's article in this months EVO on insurance premiums for hyper cars was interesting. Given the size of the premiums, owners will either need to take a flyer on tracking it without cover (not going to happen) or pay thousands for a few hours track time. That doesn't make sense when there are far more cost effective ways of going very fast on track.

It's just Top Trumps again.

There'll be a technical reason behind 217mph. Could be transmission cooling, battery pack loading/cooling or even engine cooling (however unlikely at a Vmax).
Why? I'm sure with all there experience of cooling in F1 and the P1 one not as tightly packed as a F1 car they cooling isn't a big issue. Why does it have to be a technical reason.
And if the Ferrari is faster will that alone mean it's better car than the Macca?
Because there's no sensible reason to limit Vmax outside of a technical (which brings a cost) reason. It could be tyres, it could be cooling...it could even be aerodynamic instabilities (however I really doubt it).

And better because Vmax is higher? Yeah, sure.

Oh and the cooling requirements for an F1 car will be lower than the P1 - less power output & less weight in the racer and no turbo to worry about.

Shame McLaren could not do more to the interior of the P1, it just looks dismal in there. But the car has some impressive performance, dam!
Relatively speaking, This new P1 does NOT have impressive performance at all. Just have a look recent releases. These figures are better, but not like when the F1 was released...

It just looks like it is trying a bit too hard to be special.
I still think the MP4-12C is a better looking car.

I look forward to seeing one in the flesh though.

As the public has not yet even seen any lap times or driven it, I'm not quite sure how you can 'understand' the car either.

If it's not about power figures, acceleration and top speed, why is that all that's been released? If this car is solely about the lap times, they'd surely just release, well, lap times.

Nor do I. Where is it ground breaking in the way the F1 or Veyron were. It certainly isn't the best looking. Yet another Hyper Car that 99.99 % of the owners won't have the ability to exploit.

It'll disappear into oblivion as soon as the next hypercar is released. I doubt in ten years time we'll be talking about it the way we do an F1. What are these cars all about if it's not Top Trumps anyway, surely that's all their good for. Some super rich chap winning the bragging rights down the pub/ casino or where ever they hang out.

The very first thing they talked about - and practically the only thing - they released in Paris was the amount of downforce the P1 generates. Roughly 600kg at a modest 124mph - a figure five times that of what the 12C generates. I realize downforce is not a spec most people aren't used to hearing so they have trouble comparing that to their favorite present hypercar, but its a massive figure for a road car and made very clear the intentions of the McLaren P1. Along with the downforce figure it was clearly explained there intentions with the car were to make it the fastest road legal car around a racing circuit - that's the goal and it would appear they've achieved that unless Ferrari really produces a shocker with the Enzo replacement. If you follow racing at all it should be easy to understand the P1. If you just read magazines and look at the spec sheet for 0-60, 1/4 mile times and top speed - yeah, you might struggle a bit to grasp what is going on here.

The same could be said about most 200 hp road cars.

But nobodies going to be racing it are they. So it's pointless.

Two blokes in a pub

"Have you seen my new Veyron. It's the fastest car in the world."
"No it's not, my new P1 is quicker round a circuit. Well it would be if I wasn't driving it and Lewis Hamilton was "

Mind you it does look rather fetching in Grey
