Competition with cyclists.

Some way to go as 2x11 (Campagnolo of course) = 22!
Pah - there's a good few road bikes running 3x10 these days.
Yes, a triple chainring, on a road bike, for the the ladies.

doesn't having more and more gears in tighter bands just head towards being a CVT system?

Are you/JLR's press people really claiming that the Evoque will be the first vehicle worldwide to use ZF's new 9-speed gearbox?

Have you/they not heard of the 2014MY Jeep Cherokee?

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/02/22/2014-jeep-chero...

Do you not know that Chrysler/Jeep/Fiat Group have been working with ZF too, on the first usage of ZF's new 9-speed for FWD/All-wheel drive installation?

Did you know that as well as the 2014MY Jeep Cherokee the 2013 Dodge Dart is slated to get the new ZF 9-speeder later this year too?

If you do know that, and know that the new Jeep Cherokee is expected to hit US showrooms in the Fall of this year, and that Land Rover will not get the 9-speed-fitted Evoque into showrooms until early to mid 2014 at the earliest, and that their claim to be the 'First' rests solely only on them showing a supposed 9-speed Evoque prototype at Geneva next week, why are you even deigning to run this ridiculous story?

To put it clearly, Jeep are/will be the 'First'.

Land Rover are doing their usual spoiler operation schtick, deceiving the gullible, abetted by compliant hacks.

Good grief.

OK OK, we heard you the first time. Now trot-on, besides, no one cares about Jeep.
I say well said. Jeep get knocked for their high % depreciation - a similar figure to Land Rover's % failure.

This is the unfortunate truth. My commute isn't remotely enjoyable. There's a turn out from a single-track country lane onto a dual carriageway but that's as fun as it gets. Admittedly some auto boxes are pigs, but having driven a mate's 8-speeder in his 520 it was actually quite a revelation; I wonder how many people's opinions are based on old-tech autos?
This. After years of swearing I would never have an auto, through a series of coincidences I now have two. Not sure I'd ever go back to a manual for a road car...

I have switched to a single ring on my mountain bike ! So 1x9 gives me as many gears as an Evoque ! But I do genuinely go off-road...

Amazing, all that guff and your wrong.

This will be available from now if you order and automatic, not 2014. You kind of guess at when its available but clearly not read this or other articles.

Well there is that and the fact that it doesn't really matter all that much.

I run 32:16 singlespeed (with a steel frame for maximum olde-worlde effect) , so I'm not sure the cars are competing with me............

Surely now this is getting daft? Aren't you better off with a well designed, robust CVT type arrangement for this kind of vehicle?
much prefer the 8 spd box in my 640d to the horrible, groany CVT in my RX.. I find CVTs just irritating and unnatural to drive
I disagree that the Lexus RX 400h/450h CVT is 'groany'. I have had a couple and think they are brilliant. The way they down shift for overtaking is nothing but blindingly rapid. Away from a standing start at traffic lights, a 400h is upto 30/40/50 mph in no time at all - and smooth all the way because there is no momentary deceleration associated with gear changing. CVT may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I don't understand the need for 7 / 8 / 9 speed automatics when a CVT has that covered, is strong, reliable, and not carrying around a load of extra cogs.

With so many gears, when accelerating upto higher speeds say 70mph how much time is lost due to 7 or 8 gear changes as opposed to 3 or 4 from a 6 speeder or from 2 changes from a manual(ok probably 3 or 4 from a manual)

yes it may be seamless but surely as the box changes gear losing power and no forward thrust this must have an effect on sprint times and real world driving!

You'd always be better off with a well designed, robust CVT, but sadly they don't appear to exist just yet. All practical CVT's have problems that limit their use e.g. low torque limits, poor efficiency, reliability, vibration etc.

well, not necessarily. My mate used to have a DB9 with a 6 speed box (auto) and another friend for example, has a 1.2 seat ibiza with a 5 speed box. every gear in the DB9 is taller, despite having more gears wink

9 Gears........? Purely marketing - no technical advantage here at all.

Agreed, almost all new proper road bikes are double chainring these days and either 2x10 or 2x11.

Although it's quite possible to get 3x8, 3x9 hybrids...

Actually, there's been no official confirmation yet on when or whether the Cherokee will get the nine-speed. Not saying it won't, but it hasn't been announced (see within the article to which you link, "No word yet on powertrain or pricing"). The only car that has been confirmed (officially) as having the 9HP is the Evoque. I would consider that to make it the car that is debuting the gearbox - which is what the article actually states, contrary to your assertion that it claims the Evoque will be the first vehicle to use the gearbox.
