PDK - I'm OK with that, this car is designed for track and so PDK makes perfect sense.
Is it? pretty sure it's a road carSo they need to differentiate with the gearbox settings and the throttle/steering response and the suspension settings to be more track focused.
PDK is another extension of that idea. Cup racers are sequential, not manual.
Of course a lot of owners won't take their car out to track, but for those that do, the car will need to be closer to a cup racer than a Carrera S.
The RS version will be something else I reckon.

If there was any doubt the 4.0l RS wasn't a future collectors car, it's gone now. Even the standard 3.8's might start levelling out...
These auto's - they just do nothing for me. IF I was in the position to buy a 911, I wouldn't buy this car. It's just so pointless, so irrelevant. It's not an every day car, so why on earth would you have an auto?? Lap times? It's not a racing car! Even if one was to call a STANDARD GT3 a track car (and in reality it was always just the ultimate road n/a 911 imo), I'd still have to ask why? Track days are for fun, you're not racing?!
People should be very careful with their 'effin praise of these stupid gearboxes - the manual will soon be gone, and that'll be that. All in the name of dick waving, as far as I can work out.
I quite agree with this but at the same time I'm wondering: if there was such a thing as a web-based car forum when automobiles started to move from manual ignition control to mechanised, were there people saying things like "but I like being able to control the timing on the move!" - or suchlike? These auto's - they just do nothing for me. Did people rebel against synchromesh mechanisms? Against automatic chokes?
I personally like changing gears - I think it's part of the fun of driving (an automatic gearbox to me is more like operating a whitegood - I include PDK in that).
I'm afraid I'm one of the dinosaurs.

Be interesting to see if the new RS has a manual option, if not the previous 4.0RS will remain the Porsche of choice for the purist.
Think this has a 4.5 Star rating without even needing to read a road test.
Even the Boxster is beginning to push its big bro out of the limelight - Shame.

I drove a 458 Italia for a few days and it was a delight. At no point did I pine for a manual, the character of the car suits the box just fine. I suspect here it will be the same, no better or worse than the last generation but a different driving experience. To the traditionalists, get a second hand 997GT3 and treasure it forever, but lets try out the new car before dismissing it.

I lament the passing of the character in the incompetent 911s of the 70s. This is all very modern and very sci-fi but is it really what we want?
Quite easy to replicate with a modern 911, just knock the tracking out.C

It is a valid point but I think PDK/auto boxes actually change the process of driving. Did people rebel against synchromesh mechanisms? Against automatic chokes?

I welcome technology and I don't have any problem with autos it is an evolution in the driving process, but it alters the skill of driving..it detracts from it..using a clutch pedal is a skill.
You can play a top end keyboard and sound as good as a grand piano, but to really play a grand piano you have to know how to use the pedals..
A car like this should be difficult to drive quickly.

Hands up if you are looking forward to the 981 Cayman R?
Saw the new Cayman in the "flesh" - that package with a 360+ PS engine and lightened a tad would be formidable.Hands up if you are forward to a 981 Cayman R with a manual gearbox?
