I've just found-out that BMW have reintroduced the 3.0-litre N/A straight six in the 5-series (530i) and IT'S AVAILABLE WITH A MANUAL BOX! eek Maybe someone was listening!

I know BMW's turbocharged 'sixes are great to drive, but I'd be worried about long term ownership costs. Great if you can afford a new-ish one but I'd be wary of buying, for example, an early 335i. It's the same with stop-start, DPFs and other complications. All great until they go wrong, which they do (don't talk to my father about DPFs). I'd rather gain the extra 5% economy by making the car lighter. - My 1,470 Kg 320i is positively anorexic next to most newer models and I'm shocked at superminis that weigh the same as my diesel C4.

With regards to paddleshift gearboxes etc.: For me, it all depends on whether it enhances the driving experience or detracts from it. - Some cars suit autos (say a Mercedes S-Class or Range Rover), but I wouldn't buy a BMW M car with anything but a manual - note as it says in my profile, I'd take an E46CS over the CSL.

I don't think it ever went away to be honest.
