E30 M3 was based on a 3 series too..
.....and when they came out everyone moaned that it was only lhd....... and had a rough sounding 4-pot engine instead of a smooth 6-cylinder ....and the looks were too boy-racerish compared to the more subtle 325i......etc etc etc

Basically, you can't please everyone all the time
Plenty of people moaned when the E9X M3 came out too, said that the marketing men got in the way, the old six cylinder engine was more 'pure'. When BMW announced that the new M3/M4 would have a six cylinder turbo charged engine, same people started saying 'oh I'm going to miss that V8' 'BMW have lost it etc'
When the E36 M3 came out, there were plenty of detractors saying it wasn't a proper M-car, it was too soft, too heavy, too luxury after the rawer E30 M3...... it should have been badged as a 330CSi etc etc etc.....
People always moan when new cars come out, not just from BMW, but plenty of other manufacturers. Over time opinions change,
Yes true point
