SLEEPERS! Anyone have a street sleeper here?
Discussion
it does seem a little weak. Cant tell if they were drag slicks or just track tyres at low pressure, regardless, my 500bhp Subaru (with more drivetrain losses, the wrong tyres and my arse driving) does the 1/4 in low 12 @115-120mph.
My mates old 550bhp Corsa, still fwd and on the wrong tyres for drag, ran 11.9 @ 129mph.

All right so my 2.0 zetec 87 fiesta pop, split the consensus when I posted it.
How about the new one? Xu10j2te swapped 205 GTi? Yes yes I know it's a sporty model. But would you really expect 30 year old 110bhp pug to be north of 250bhp ( not dyno'ed it with the new gt28r turbo, but made 218bhp and 266lbft with the old T25 that ran out of puff)
Will out run a 140i/240i m and was hanging onto a range rover SVR last night
Otherwise Looks pretty much standard, even hidden the intercooler best I can.
Build thread if you're interested

Possibly on the lower end of the spectrum. I’d never actually realised that the originals had that little power.
Been brought up around Mi16 swaps and race spec ones making 220-250bhp so used to them going pretty well.
It is certainly very tidy which would also make me think it was hiding one of the above.
Nice car though

I don't care what the sleeper police say, that thing is awesome. How about the new one? Xu10j2te swapped 205 GTi? Yes yes I know it's a sporty model. If they had 120bhp new they have much less now. Yes they corner well but surely nobody expects it to be actually fast in a straight line?
My sorrento green one I sold a couple of years ago was a standard 1.9GTI and was clean as yours but was not a fast car by any modern standard.

I really like that pug too
Seeing one in such nice condition I would assume it’s super original and that the owner is more interested in polishing it and talking about investment value than hiding 250hp under the bonnet and actually driving it!

Must be equally hilarious/petrifying as it comes in boost

Whilst I understand the "boggo-looking everyday cars are suspicious" logic of some, when you go to classic and modern classic car shows you see a lot of cars that would have been pretty humdrum in their time that are in very good, sometimes concourse, condition.
If they have additional power, it's usually something minor that's been done in the name of keeping up with modern traffic and motorway cruising. E.g. replacing the engine with a slightly later version of the original engine or adding fuel injection.

Allowing for the risk of starting an internet fight, by what measure is a 120hp 30 year old car a "hot hatch" by modern standards? HOT HATCHES ARE MEANT TO BE FAST. This is the same level as the muppet who tried to claim their Audi S6 was a sleeper...
My diesel Kia estate has more power and more torque. Surely there's a limit? There's fast, and there's FAST. Ah st I got sucked into the argument I swore I wouldn't.

Abit harsh I have over doubled the power. that was quite special tho. And didn't another poster get very upset about it I forget the car tho a VRS maybe? HOT HATCHES ARE MEANT TO BE FAST. This is the same level as the muppet who tried to claim their Audi S6 was a sleeper...
So a fast car has been made faster. Akin to a GTR being posted on here saying "it's sleeper because is now 1000bhp and not 500..."
The word people seem to be missing is perception. Do people perceive a hot hatch as slow? No? Then how can it be a sleeper.
I would say it DEFINITELY belongs on the well modified thread as it is gorgeous. You have to be very happy with it?

I usually agree that a hot hatch or 'fast' car can't be a sleeper (S6 Audi definitely not) but 80s hot hatches are pretty old and slow by today's standards, so if they look standard but are 250+ hp/ton, it's on the sleeper spectrum in 2022. Whereas 10-20 years ago, no.
Similarly, stuff that was quick in the 70s/80s like say a top spec Granada or Capri, which could not have been sleepers in the 80s/90s - if in 2022 they were very original looking but had 400+ hp under the bonnet, I would see them as sleepers. Not the ultimate examples of a sleeper, but nonetheless...

I don't get the obsession with the s6 not being a sleeper
The first 3 generation were pretty much as subtle as you can get, an extra tail pipe and a badge were about the only thing that tell them apart from the 2L diesel versions.
And it was a very boring shaped car
Sure the latest one is less subtle, but nothing is, you can buy a basic civic and it has twin center exhausts, a ford focus diesel has an optional rear diffuser, the possibility for judging a cars performance by its styling went out the window about 10 years ago.

I find that very well-maintained classics like that are a victim of their own tidiness - if I saw it as a PHer obviously you'd see the condition it was in then clock the bonnet catches and think "hmmm...". Even the Muggles may suspect it's a bit tastier than it should be.Similarly, stuff that was quick in the 70s/80s like say a top spec Granada or Capri, which could not have been sleepers in the 80s/90s - if in 2022 they were very original looking but had 400+ hp under the bonnet, I would see them as sleepers. Proper sleeper points would be a 205 that looks like a right old nail. But as with all these things there's no definition, it's all subjective.
